REDWOOD FALLS — Marshall’s Esther Say earned her second state tournament berth over the weekend, battling her way to a runner-up finish in 170-pound weight class of the Section 3 girls wrestling tournament at Redwood Valley High School.

Say also qualified for the 2023 state tournament as an eighth grader, placing fourth in the 165 bracket. Say’s qualification this year marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Tigers have sent a girls wrestler to the state tournament. Hannah Ratajczak qualified in 142 each of the last two years, taking home a sixth-place finish in 2024 and a fourth-place finish in 2025.

After getting a bye for the first day of competition, Say opened her section tournament run with a pin of Wabasso’s Heidi Foy in the semifinals in 43 seconds. Say fell via pin to New Ulm Area’s Ellie Dake in the championship match, but did not have a wrestle back for the runner-up spot after Foy advanced through the consolation bracket to finish third in the tournament.

Traeh Siekmann, a senior from Marshall, placed fourth in 124. After falling to Elli Levine in the semifinals, Siekmann bounced back by pinning New Ulm Area’s Anna Pollard in the consolation semifinals. Yet, Siekmann fell via 10-0 decision to Ashlin Gibson in the third-place match, after Siekmann defeated Gibson in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Evelyn Rentschler also placed fourth in 142, starting Saturday’s consolation bracket run with a win over Marshall’s Yasha Sleiter before falling to Hastings’ Elyse Versland in the third-place match.

Sleiter went on to place sixth in the bracket, falling to Wabasso’s Camryn Irlbeck in the fifth-place match.

Wabasso totaled three fifth-place finishes in the section tournament, with Ayla Ourada in 100 and Emma Mertens in 106 joining Irlbeck.

Red Rock Central got a fifth-place finish from Izzy Chmelar in 118 and a sixth-place finish from Zoey Mittelstadt in 106 while TMB/WWG also got a sixth-place finish from Bella Martinez in 148.

The girls state wrestling tournament is slated to be held at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, with the girls round of 16 slated to start on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 9 a.m. Girls quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on the 27th while girls championship, third-place and fifth-place matches will wrap up on Feb. 28.
