Peterson’s big night leads Canby past Minneota

CANBY — Owen Peterson and Jace Rangaard combined for 48 points on Monday night to propel the Canby boys basketball team to an 81-69 Camden Conference win over Minneota.
Peterson was the game’s leading scorer, finishing with 27 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field. He made each of his seven attempts from inside the arc as well as a pair of 3-pointers, and his 14 rebounds and eight assists were both team-highs.
Rangaard spaced the floor for the Lancers, shooting 5 of 13 from 3-point range for 21 points.
Hunter Kack also contributed 16 points for Canby while Will Abrahamson grabbed eight rebounds with four steals, four assists and a block.
Ian Myhre led Minneota with 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting while Evan Jerzak and Jase Sorensen contributed 13 and 10, respectively. Myhre and Jerzak also tied with a team-high eight rebounds, while Jerzak also came away with three steals.
Canby improves to 5-14 with the win and plays its final regular-season road game tonight against Renville County West (14-6) at 7:30 p.m.
Minneota falls to 6-15 and heads to Granite Falls tonight for a matchup against YME (3-18) at 7 p.m.
WWG 88, YME 73
GRANITE FALLS — Drew Swanson exploded for 33 points on Monday, night, knocking down four 3-pointers on eight attempts to lead the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team past Yellow Medicine East for an 88-73 non-conference win.
Swanson also grabbed six rebounds in the game and dished out three assists with two turnovers.
Jackson Jenniges led the Chargers on the glass with 11 rebounds and also scored 16 points with four assists. Connor Jackels, Neil Kuehl and Max Wiborg also finished in double figures with 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Gunnar Fagen led YME with 21 points on 8 of 15 shooting, followed by 18 points from Kia GreyCloud on 8 of 13 shooting. Owen Torvik and Cooper McCosh also contributed 12 and 10 points, with McCosh grabbing a team-high six rebounds and Torvik blocking three shots.
WWG improves to 14-8 on the year with the win and aims to extend its winning streak to five games when it hosts No. 5 Hills-Beaver Creek (18-2) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
YME falls to 3-18 and looks to end its four-game losing streak when it hosts Minneota (6-15) at the same time.
MCC 62, TMB 42
TRACY — The tenacious defense of the Murray County Central boys basketball team shut down Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in the second half of Saturday’s non-conference matchup. The Rebels held the Panthers to 13 points after the break as MCC came from behind to claim a 62-42 victory.
MCC trailed 29-28 at halftime but didn’t give TMB an inch in the second half. For the game, TMB shot 33% from the field and 5 of 26 from 3 (19%). MCC, meanwhile, shot 45% from the field and 7 of 22 from 3 (32%).
Aidan Swenson led MCC’s scorers with 22 points on 10 of 18 shooting, followed by 9 points each from Max Miller and Wyatt Thompson. Miller was the Rebels’ primary floor spacer as well, shooting 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
Swenson and Thompson were also the Rebels’ defensive leaders. Thompson swatted away four blocks while Swenson recorded another pair of blocks. Swenson’s six total rebounds also tied Dugan Kluis for second on the team to Cayden Veldhuisen’s seven.
Kluis was a prolific passer in the game for the Rebels with seven assists on just one turnover. Carter Hanson also dished out five assists on one turnover.
Connor Lanoue shot 5 of 14 from the field to lead TMB with 16 points. Eli Lightfoot was the only other Panther with more than 5 points in the game, scoring 7 on 3 of 4 shooting.
Lanoue, Emery Xiong and Griffin Zick each dished out three assists for the Panthers, and Zick’s eight total rebounds were also a team-high.
MCC improves to 13-5 on the season with the win and heads to Tyler on Tuesday for a Red Rock Conference matchup against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (12-8).
KMS 86, TMB 69
TRACY — The Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg boys basketball team had too much firepower in the second half for Tracy-Milroy-Balaton to handle on Monday, powering past the Panthers after the break for an 86-69 Camden Conference win.
TMB led 35-33 at halftime but was outscored by 19 points in the second half of the loss.
Griffin Zick’s hot hand from 3 kept the Panthers in the game. He finished the night with 27 points on 10 of 21 shooting from the field. He also shot 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, and his eight total rebounds were a game-high.
Connor Lanoue also contributed 18 points on 7 of 15 shooting. His six assists tied Carson Lanoue for a team-high, with Connor’s coming on three turnovers and Carson’s coming on one.
TMB falls to 8-14 on the year and next hosts Lakeview (7-14) in Tracy tonight at 7:30 p.m.
