MARSHALL — Patrick Morman’s big performance of 25 points and eight steals powered the Marshall boys basketball team to a senior night and Big South Conference 62-52 win over Redwood Valley Tuesday night. The Tigers honored its group of six seniors, while picking up its third win in four games.
“It’s been a long ride. It means a lot, and hopefully this year we can make it somewhere and make it to state,” Morman said of senior night. “We were all hyped up [about tonight]. We’re all trying our handshake before the game, seeing what we were going to do. It’s been good.”
Marshall faced an early 10-point deficit, but fought back to eventually take a 5-point halftime lead. Although Redwood Valley continued to put together runs, the Tigers came up with a handful of big defensive stops down the stretch to make the difference.
Oliver Voigt followed Morman with 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while Davion Xayarath also finished in double-figure scoring with 10 points. Morman also shot 7 of 7 from the foul line.
Redwood Valley put together a 12-2 run in the opening minutes of the second half to take back a 36-33 lead capped by an open 3-pointer, continuing on the game’s competitive start after Marshall went into the break with a 26-21 lead.
But, Morman was Marshall’s answer in getting some offensive rhythm going again who went on a 9-0 run himself midway through the half with a trio of layups and three free throws after drawing a foul while shooting from the perimeter.
“My teammates just set me up for good luck,” Morman said. “We just had a mindset [of] do not take this team lightly. It was the same mindset we had going into Friday night against St. Peter [in a 62-56 win]. To just fight hard.”
Marshall took a 50-38 lead following Morman’s run, who was also playing with three fouls after drawing his third in the early minutes of the half.
Continuing the night’s trend, the Cardinals weren’t done fighting and again went on a 12-2 run to take back the lead with 3:19 to play, 52-50.
Redwood Valley’s offensive rebounding allowed the Cardinals to get a few second-chance points amidst the run, while also applying a full-court press.
Yet, Morman again came up with a string of clutch plays down the stretch to help give Marshall back the lead and prevail for the win.
Voigt and Morman each cashed in a bucket to help put the Tigers up 56-52, while Morman put the dagger on the win with another steal and fastbreak layup with 50 seconds to play to go ahead by 6 points.
The Tigers forced a turnover on the press as Redwood Valley threw the ball out of bounds, as the Cardinals began to intentionally foul the rest of the way while Lee capitalized on a final layup off an inbound play.
The Cardinals were outrebounded 34-30, and Marshall capitalized on its 11 steals while Redwood Valley finished with five.
Marshall took a few minutes to get settled with facing trouble in getting shots to fall through the first half, but was able to put together a 9-0 run to help get in front for a 5-point lead at the break.
Redwood Valley opened the game with a 12-2 lead after a 9-0 start before Voigt got the Tigers on the board with a pair of free throws after going the first five minutes without a basket.
Marshall got its offense going to cut into a 12-11 deficit, with baskets coming from Andrew Lee, Voigt, JR Vierstraete and Morman during the Tigers’ run.
Both teams spent time playing in a zone defense, and gave up a string of turnovers throughout the first half as well.
Yet, the Tigers also applied some full-court pressure to fluster the Cardinals in the later minutes of the first.
Marshall caught the hot hand from the perimeter to get in front of Redwood Valley, with a Xayarath 3 to pull the Tigers within a point before Morman hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Marshall the 26-21 edge heading into the locker room.
Morman led the Tigers with 15 points in the first half.
“We executed good toward the end of the first half,” Morman said regarding what the team talked about at halftime. “We got a lead, and to just be able to lock in and start making those shots.”
Prior to the game, Marshall took time to honor its talented group of seniors in their second-to-last home game of the regular season.
Marshall’s graduating group includes Vierstraete, Logan Eickhoff, Levi Maeyaert, Morman, Aiden Bly and Xatarath.
Morman also said that the senior group wants to lead the team through the postseason with a winning and competitive mindset, fighting to the final possession.
The Tigers came into Tuesday off a big 62-56 win over No. 10 St. Peter on Friday, who they also beat earlier in the season as well.
With Tuesday’s win, Marshall improves its record to .500 at 10-10 and will look to keep its momentum going when it travels to take on fourth-ranked Montevideo (18-1) at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
