MCC’s defense shines in win over Adrian/Ellsworth

SLAYTON — The suffocating defense of the Murray County Central shut down the Adrian/Ellsworth Dragons in a Red Rock Conference matchup Friday night. The Rebels limited the Dragons to 27% shooting from the field and 14% shooting from 3, as MCC ran away with an 84-38 win.
Wyatt Thompson helped protect the paint in the win with four blocks while also snagging a pair of steals. Cayden Veldhuisen was the Rebels’ primary asset in the turnover department, meanwhile, coming away with five steals, followed by three each from Max Miller and Tristan Behrends.
Dugan Kluis dished out seven assists and Behrends added another five, each finishing with a pair of turnovers.
Veldhuisen and Thompson were the lone Rebels to score in double figures, each shooting 6 of 10 from the field on the night. Veldhuisen finished with 16 points with three 3-pointers while Thompson contributed another 13. MCC had six players score at least 8 points and another three score at least six points.
Krew Schneider grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, followed by six from THompson and five each from Carter Hanson and Behrends. Hanson’s three offensive rebounds were also a game-high.
MCC improves to 17-5 with the win and closes out the regular season on the road when it takes on No. 6 Hills-Beaver Creek (22-3) Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Wabasso 94, Lester Prairie 61
WABASSO — In its final regular-season tune-up before the Tomahawk Conference championship game next week, the Wabasso boys basketball team came away with a win. Led by Drew Kemp, Caden Frericks and Brayden Guetter, the Rabbits pulled ahead early and cruised to a 94-61 win over Lester Prairie.
Frericks finished with another double-double for the Rabbits, grabbing 15 total rebounds along with 19 points on 9 of 11 shooting. He also dished out three assists with no turnovers.
Kemp was the Rabbits’ primary facilitator, distributing eight assists without a turnover while scoring 9 points with a pair of steals.
Guetter finished as Wabasso’s leading scorer with 24 points on 9 of 14 shooting, knocking down three 3-pointers and logging three steals and a block on the defensive end.
Jayden Remiger anchored the Rabbits defensively with three steals and a block, also shooting 4 of 6 from the field for 10 points.
Wabasso closes out its regular season at 23-3 and next hosts Springfield (19-6) for the Tomahawk Conference Championship on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Rabbits defeated the Tigers 81-74 in the teams’ first matchup of the year, but Springfield got revenge in the rematch, handing Wabasso its first loss of the year by a score of 74-72.
RTR 84, RRC 47
LAMBERTON — After a back-and-forth first half, the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team found a way to pull away after the break against Red Rock Central Friday night to come away with an 84-47 Red Rock Conference win.
The Knights maintained a narrow 35-32 lead at halftime, but outscored the Falcons by 34 points after the break.
Henry Stavnes finished as the Falcons’ leading scorer with 30 points and Abe Stavnes added another 10. Jordan Therkilsen led RRC defensively with six steals and Jake Erickson grabbed eight rebounds.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton improves to 14-11 on the year and closes out the regular season on the road, Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Adrian/Ellsworth (3-22).
Red Rock Central falls to 6-19 and looks to close the regular season on a high note when it hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (3-22) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
WWG 67, Edgerton 62
EDGERTON — Drew Swanson put together another big offensive night for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team Friday, leading the Chargers to a 67-62 Red Rock Conference win.
Swanson connected on three 3-point attempts on the day and finished with 24 points, 12 in each half. Kyle Curry and Neil Kuehl chipped in 11 and 10, respectively, along with six rebounds for Curry.
Jackson Jenniges filled the box score for the Chargers with a game-high 10 rebounds while tying Kuehl with five assists. He also contributed 8 points on the night.
WWG improves to 15-10 on the year and closes out the regular season at home Monday, hosting Southwest Minnesota Christian (21-4) at 7:15 p.m.
Springfield 82, TMB 49
SPRINGFIELD — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team wasn’t able to stage an upset against Springfield on Friday night, falling 82-49 to the Tigers in a non-conference matchup to close out the regular season.
Griffin Zick ended the night as TMB’s offensive leader with 21 points on 9 of 16 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. He also grabbed three rebounds with a pair of steals in the game. No other Panthers scored in double figures.
Springfield had four players finish in double figures, including 29 points from Madden Lendt and 20 from Bryan Buerkle.
Connor Lanoue dished out five assists for TMB on two turnovers, also scoring 7 points.
Jackson Kruse and Aiden Sanow each grabbed three defensive rebounds in the game. Springfield outrebounded the Panthers 39-16 on the night, including 18 offensive boards for the Tigers.
TMB closes its regular season at 11-15. The Panthers now await seeding for the Section 3A tournament, which will have its play-in round at the home site of the high seed on Thursday at 7 p.m. From there, the South subsection quarterfinals will be played on Saturday in Worthington.
