MCC surges past RTR for Red Rock victory

MCC 52, RTR 48

TYLER — The Murray County Central girls basketball team came out on top of a back-and-forth Red Rock Conference battle against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Monday night, taking its first lead of the game a few minutes into the second half and holding on for a 52-48 win.

Joelle Hellewell led MCC offensively in the win with 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. She also tied Ava Deacon with a team-high three assists.

Reese Gilbertson also scored 10 points for MCC while Kat Miller and Deacon each scored another 8.

RTR held a narrow 30-28 lead at halftime, but MCC outscored the Knights by 6 points after the break to hold on for the win.

Makayla Hesse and Ava Guida led RTR offensively with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Paisley Thooft also scored 8 points and made a major impact on the glass and on defense, finishing with 12 rebounds and five steals.

Calleigh Doeden grabbed eight rebounds for MCC, followed by another seven from Blankenship. Deacon and Gilbertson each came away with five steals on the defensive end.

MCC improves to 12-9 with the win, clinching a winning record for the year, and next goes on the road to take on Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (11-11) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

RTR drops to 12-11 with the loss and looks to remain above .500 when it goes on the road to take on Westbrook-Walnut Grove (13-9) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Canby 48, TMB 45

TRACY — The Canby girls basketball team staved off a furious comeback effort from Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Monday to earn a 48-45 Camden Conference win, spoiling the Panthers’ home finale..

Canby led 21-12 at halftime before TMB bounced back with 33 second-half points. Still, the Lancers’ early cushion was enough to withstand the rally as they held on for the win.

Brynn Kockelman and Ava Danielson finished as Canby’s leading scorers, Kockelman scoring 14 points on 5 of 16 shooting and Danielson adding 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting.

Ella Thovson led the Lancers on the glass with nine total rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, while Danielson grabbed another seven boards.

Gretchen Lanoue, Melaina Ankrum and Alli Dolan led TMB with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ankrum also dished out five assists on three turnovers, and her eight total rebounds and five steals were both game-highs.

Lanoue and Elsie Knott each also grabbed seven rebounds.

Canby improves to 11-12 with the win and looks to close out the regular season at .500 when it goes on the road to Cottonwood to take on Lakeview (19-6) in its next game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton falls to 8-16 and looks to end its five-game slide when it heads to Granite Falls for a matchup against Yellow Medicine East (6-15) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd 52, LQPV 43

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team kept the door open for a .500 season this year on Monday, pulling away in the second half of its Camden Conference matchup against Lac qui Parle Valley for a 52-43 win in its home finale.

The Blackjacks led 28-25 at the midway mark, but outscored LQPV by 6 points after the break to hang on for the win.

Claire Stratmoen led a group of three double-digit scorers for the Blackjacks, scoring 13 points on 4 of 19 shooting. Kylar Hjelmeland and Alyssa Swedzinski each shot 4 of 13 from the field for 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Alivia Estling chipped in another 9 points.

Estling grabbed eight total and five offensive rebounds, and her five steals were also a team-high. Stratmoen blocked a shot with three steals and six rebounds, while Hjelmeland grabbed another seven rebounds.

Dawson-Boyd improves to 11-12 with the win and closes out the regular season against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (11-11) tonight at 7 p.m. A win would even the Blackjacks record for the year just a season after finishing 7-18.

Wabasso 73, Lester Prairie 64

WABASSO — Kenley Guetter’s dominant performance on the glass helped the Wabasso girls basketball team overcome a halftime deficit for a 73-64 Tomahawk Conference win over Lester Prairie on Monday night.

Guetter grabbed 18 total and eight offensive rebounds in the game. She was also the Rabbits’ primary scorer, shooting 9 of 14 from the field for a game-high 22 points.

Ava Samyn also scored 16 points for Wabasso and Elizabeth Morin added another 10. Audrey Johnson set up the scorers with five turnover-free assists.

On the defensive side of the ball, Morin and Sara Carlson each snagged three steals.

Wabasso improves to 8-17 on the season and closes the season when it hosts Cedar Mountain (17-3) tonight at 7:15 p.m.

YME 59, RCW 44

RENVILLE — Alana Almich and Bailey Mortenson’s dual double-doubles helped the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team take down Renville County West 59-44 in Camden Conference play Monday night.

Almich finished the night as the Sting’s leading scorer and rebounder, posting 21 points on 7 of 24 shooting with 15 total rebounds. Mortenson, meanwhile, added 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting with 11 rebounds.

Mortenson and Almich each blocked a pair of shots in the game, and Almich tied Bayli Sneller with a team-high three steals. Almich’s four 3s were also a game-high, and her four offensive boards trailed only Mortenson’s five.

Charlotte Paslawski contributed another 10 points in the win.

YME improves to 7-15 with the win and hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-16) for its penultimate home game of the season on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

No. 10 HBC 66, WWG 45

WESTBROOK — Another big scoring night from Leah Carter wasn’t enough to put the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team on top in its 66-45 loss to No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek on Monday in Red Rock Conference play.

Carter scored 24 points in the game, accounting for more than half of her team’s total. Carlie Ross was the only other Charger to knock down multiple field goals, finishing with 9 points.

WWG falls to 13-10 with the loss and looks to avoid its fourth straight loss when it goes on the road to take on Class 2A Jackson County Central (10-13) tonight at 7:30 p.m.

No. 10 HBC 67, TMB 49

HILLS — Gretchen Lanoue’s strong scoring performance wasn’t enough to lead the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team to an upset win over No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek in a non-conference matchup Saturday. The Panthers fell behind by 16 points at halftime and never recovered, losing 67-49 to the Patriots.

Lanoue scored 19 points on 6 of 19 shooting with three 3-pointers. Her six rebounds also tied Melaina Ankrum for a team-high and her three assists trailed only Ankrum’s seven.

Lanoue was the Panthers’ only scorer in double figures, while Ella Sammons’ 21 points headlined a group of four Patriots in double figures.
