HUTCHINSON — Brayden Chandler set the Marshall single-season pins record at the Section 3AA individual wrestling tournament on Saturday. He and Lincoln Christenson each claimed individual section titles on the day while Keynan Coequyt, Tyson Louwagie and Tyler Kraft each finished as runners-up to earn state tournament bids.

Chandler pinned Jace Kleindl in the 160-pound semifinals to earn his 32nd pin of the season. He went on to down Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United’s Kameron Sather via 10-1 major decision in the championship match to return to state.

Christenson claimed his third consecutive section championship in 121, pinning each of his first two opponents and earning an 18-5 major decision in the championship match against Ryder Antony. Christenson has the opportunity to repeat as a state champion after winning the 114AA title last year, and he enters the state tournament ranked No. 2 in Class AA 121 this year.

While Louwagie has appeared in the state tournament before as a member of the Marshall wrestling team when the Tigers qualified for the team tournament last season, he earned his first individual state berth on Saturday. The Tiger senior spent most of the season wrestling at 152, but he jumped up two weight classes for the team section tournament and advanced all the way to the championship match before falling via 2-1 decision to New Ulm’s Candon Briggs. Still, Louwagie earned a 14-8 decision over New London-Spicer’s Caleb Nelson in the true second-place match.

Keynan Coequyt returns to the state tournament for Marshall after finishing as a section champion last year. This time around, Coequyt eked out an 11-8 sudden victory in the semifinals before falling via major decision in the final.

Tyler Kraft also earned a runner-up finish for the Tigers, picking up pins in the first two rounds of the tournament and winning via major decision in the semifinals before falling on a 4-2 decision against New Ulm’s Lane Ruch in the final.

United’s Eli Olson and Benjamin Gunlogson each won section titles in 114 and 145, while Sather was the 160-pound runner-up. Gunlogson and Sather have both qualified for the state tournament in four consecutive seasons while Olson has made it in each of the last three.

Marshall had 12 of its 13 wrestlers medal on the day, including third-place finishes from Andrew Yang, Levi Kraft and Dawson DeCamp. McCoy Marthaler and Felix Kelsey also earned fourth-place finishes while Noah Frazee and Kael Frana placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

United had a total of seven medalists. Bryan Rhode earned a third-place finish, Gavin Mortenson placed fourth, and Holland Schacherer and Griffin Johnson placed fifth and sixth.

The Class AA state individual wrestling tournament will begin on Thursday at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul at 9 a.m. Schedule changes this year mean that the first round will be wrestled on Thursday, the quarterfinals and Semifinals will be held on Friday and the championships are slated for Saturday.
