FAIRMONT — The Marshall wrestling team started off the final day of the Section 3AA tournament with a strong 54-11 win over Windom Mountain Lake in the semifinals on Saturday, but wasn’t able to repeat as section champs after falling to New Ulm in the championship dual, 31-23.

New Ulm also defeated Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United by a score of 64-12 in the semifinal round.

As the top seed from the North bracket, the Tigers took on the South’s second-seeded Windom in the semifinals. A pair of pins from McCoy Marthaler and Lincoln Christenson, and a pair of wins by technical fall from Andrew Yang and Keynan Coequyt, gave Marshall a 22-0 lead through the first four matches. Marshall continued to roll, winning each of the matches below 152 and each of the matches above 160, to cruise to the championship.

Marshall entered the weekend ranked 12th in Class AA while New Ulm was ranked seventh. The Eagles backed up the ranking by clinching its first state tournament appearance since 1999, and second in program history, with a 31-23 win.

Coequyt earned a ranked win in the championship dual, downing No. 6 Alex Portner via 15-11 decision in 127.

The Eagles clinched the section title when No. 10 Lane Ruch edged out Tyler Kraft with a 6-5 decision in 189. Marshall won each of the last two matches, including a pin by Brayden Chandler in 215, but still fell shy of the comeback.

Lincoln Christenson, ranked No. 2 in 121, earned 11 points for Marshall across his two matches, earning a second-period technical fall in the semifinals and a first-period pin in the championship. Brayden Chandler was the lone Tiger with two pins on the day.

Marshall now prepares for the Section 3AA individual tournament at Hutchinson on Saturday.

The Tigers qualified a total of seven wrestlers for last year’s individual state tournament. In addition to eventual state champion Lincoln Christenson in 114, Marshall also had Coequyt (107), Landon Marthaler (127) and Gavin Schaefer (215) finish as section champions and Brayden Chandler (160), Aidan Mattison (189) and Braedyn VanMeveren (285) finish as section runners-up.
