Lakeview girls claim Camden South title with win over Canby

Lakeview 46, Canby 39
COTTONWOOD — Lakeview finished off its regular season in style on Thursday night, pulling out a 46-39 win over Canby to clinch the Camden South title and a spot in next week’s conference championship game.
Anah Schmidt and Brynn Stensrud both scored in double figures in what was a defense-first battle. Schmidt scored 12 points on 4 of 16 shooting and Stensrud added another 10 points on 5 of 11 shooting.
On the defensive side of the ball, Schmidt logged three blocks and a steal on the night and Brook Gunlogson had a block with three steals. Stensrud also contributed one block and one steal, and grabbed a game-high 16 total rebounds.
Stats for Canby were unavailable upon request at the time of publication.
Lakeview (20-6) now awaits seeding for the Section 3A tournament, which will be announced over the weekend. Before the section tournament gets started, the Lakers will go on the road to take on No. 6 Central Minnesota Christian (20-2) in the Camden Conference Championship on Monday at 7 p.m.
Canby (11-12) wraps up its regular season on the road when it takes on Dawson-Boyd (12-12) on Monday at 6:45 p.m.
YME 73, TMB 68
GRANITE FALLS — Sophomore Bailey Mortenson scored her 1,000th point for the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team on Thursday night, going off for a game-high 25 points as the Sting earned a 73-68 Camden Conference win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.
Mortenson shot 11 of 19 from the field in the game while also grabbing nine total and six offensive rebounds.
Alana Almich led the Sting in the paint with 15 total and four offensive rebounds, as well as a block on the defensive end. She also scored 16 points on 6 of 15 shooting with four 3-pointers.
Gretchen Lanoue scored a team-high 21 points for TMB, shooting 8 of 14 from the field with eight rebounds and four assists. Melaina Ankrum also dished out eight assists with eight rebounds and 10 points, while Alli Dollan contributed another 15 points.
YME’s Charlotte Paslawski and Bayli Sneller chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively, with Sneller snagging seven steals on the defensive end of the court.
Yellow Medicine East (8-15) hosts Minneota (17-7) for its final home game of the regular season on Monday at 6 p.m.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-16) concludes its regular season with a road matchup against Springfield (9-13) on Monday at 6 p.m.
RTR 57, WWG 56
WESTBROOK — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team played spoiler for Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s home finale on Thursday, defeating the Chargers 57-56 behind Paisley Thooft and Brezlyn Buchert’s combined 37 points.
Thooft finished the night with a team-high 19 points. She knocked down a pair of 3s in each half and scored 13 of her points after the break.
Buchert added another 19 points, also making two 3s in each half and scoring 10 of her points in the second half.
Leah Carter led WWG with 23 points in the loss and Leah VanDeWiele added another 10.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (13-11) hits the road for a matchup against Pipestone Area (19-3) on Saturday at noon.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (14-11) wraps up its regular season in Lamberton when it takes on Red Rock Central (1-24) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Minneota 80, RCW 43
RENVILLE — Jaylyn Coequyt and Ava Rost combined for 46 points to power the Minneota girls basketball team to a strong 80-43 Camden Conference victory over Renville County West Thursday night.
Coequyt led the way with a team-high 26 points and 17 rebounds, while shooting 50% from the field. Ava Rost followed with another 20 points on 80% shooting, and also went 4 of 5 from the 3-point line.
Brynn Rost dished out a team-high four assists, while Libby Sussner and Ava Rost shared a team-best of three steals each.
The Vikings shot an efficient 7 of 16 from the perimeter, and went 42% in the field while holding the Jaguars to 27% field-goal shooting. Minneota also outrebounded RCW 37-18 and forced 35 turnovers to control the game on both ends of the court.
Minneota ended the night with 23 turnovers.
Notably, the Vikings were aggressive on the defensive end with 16 steals, while RCW had eight.
Minneota (17-7) heads out on the road for a game against No. 7 Mayer Lutheran (18-5) tonight at 7:15 p.m.
MCC 65, HLOF 55
FULDA — The Murray County central girls basketball team sixth-straight game after taking down Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda 65-55 Thursday night in a Red Rock Conference matchup.
The Rebels got consistent production across the board on both ends of the floor and prevailed for the win through their all-around strong team effort.
Calleigh Doeden led MCC with 15 points, seven steals and nine rebounds, and shot 7 of 10 from the foul line.
Joelle Hellewell followed with 11 points on 50% shooting and went 3 of 4 from the perimeter, while Kat Miller added in another 10 points.
Kate Blankenship finished with seven rebounds to her 8 points, as did Reese Gilbertson with another six boards and 8 points, and a team-high four assists.
MCC shot 10 of 22 from deep, while Blankenship and Miller also made a pair of 3-pointers each.
Murray County Central (13-9) hosts No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek (22-3) for its regular-season finale on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Edgerton 69, RRC 46
EDGERTON — Brai Olson’s big offensive night wasn’t enough to get the Red Rock Central girls basketball team back in the win column on Thursday. After winning its first game of the season on Tuesday, the Falcons fell 69-46 to Edgerton on Thursday in Red Rock Conference play.
Olson finished the game with 20 points for the Falcons while Kendra Schroeder added another 13, along with five assists and four steals.
Red Rock Central falls to 1-24 on the year and returns to Lamberton to host Westbrook-Walnut Grove (14-11) in its regular-season finale on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
