Lakers fall to No. 6 CMC in Camden Championship

PRINSBURG — The Lakeview girls basketball team wasn’t able to keep pace with No. 6 Central Minnesota Christian in Monday’s Camden Conference championship game. The Bluejays sprinted out to a 21-point lead at halftime and never looked back, defeating the Lakers 78-47.

Anah Schmidt put together another quality effort for the Lakers on the glass in the loss, grabbing 10 total and four offensive rebounds. Her 11 points on 4 of 10 shooting also were second only to Brynn Stensrud’s 15, and Schmidt also logged a pair of blocks.

Addyson Jorgenson grabbed five rebounds and blocked a shot while Brook Gunlogson came away with a pair of steals, four rebounds and 7 points.

Lakeview falls to 20-8 with the loss and now prepares for the Section 3A tournament. After earning the No. 3 seed in the North bracket, the Lakers will take on No. 6 Dawson-Boyd (12-13) in the subsection quarterfinals on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Montevideo High School.

Minneota 74, YME 47

MINNEOTA — In a Camden Conference matchup with strong individual scoring performances on both sides, the Minneota girls basketball team came away with a win on Monday, downing Yellow Medicine East 74-47 in its regular-season finale.

Jaylyn Coequyt led the Vikings offensively with 24 points on 8 of 22 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds, blocked a pair of shots and came away with a pair of steals in the win.

Despite the loss, Bailey Mortenson had another big game for the Sting. She shot 10 of 22 from the field for 26 points, also knocking down her lone 3-point attempt. Her six offensive rebounds were a game-high, finishing with nine total rebounds, and she also dished out five assists with a steal and a block.

Libby Sussner grabbed a game-high 11 total rebounds for Minneota while shooting 7 of 10 from the field for 16 points.

Ava Rost led the Vikings defensively with six steals and a block, along with seven rebounds, while Autum Anderson also finished with 12 points for Minneota.

Alana Almich scored 12 points with six rebounds, three blocks and four steals for the Sting.

Minneota finishes its regular season at 18-8, having won five of its last six games, and enters the Section 3A tournament as the fourth seed in the North bracket. The Vikings will take on No. 5 Canby (12-13) in the subsection quarterfinals at Montevideo High School on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Yellow Medicine East falls to 8-16 and wraps up its regular season on the road against Benson (13-11) tonight at 7 p.m.

Canby 56, Dawson-Boyd 48

DAWSON — Brynn Kockelman and Ava Danielson combined for 30 points for the Canby girls basketball team to close out the regular season with a 56-48 Camden Conference win over Dawson-Boyd.

The Lancer guards each scored 15 points in the game, Kockelman shooting 5 of 14 with four 3s and Danielson shooting 5 of 9 while making each of her two 3-point attempts. Danielson also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Laura Schreier, Claire Stratmoen and Alivia Estling each scored 12 points to lead the Blackjacks. Stratmoen and Estling each shot 50% from the field on 12 and 10 attempts, respectively, while Schreier shot 5 of 11.

Stratmoen and Hjelmeland each grabbed six rebounds for the Blackjacks, and Stratmoen tied Canby’s Addison Driessen with a game-high three steals.

Canby (12-13) now prepares for the Section 3A tournament, entering as the No. 5 seed and taking on No. 4 Minneota (18-8) in the North subsection quarterfinals at Montevideo High School on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd (12-13) enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed and takes on No. 3 Lakeview Lakers (20-8) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Montevideo.

WWG 72, RRC 35

LAMBERTON — Leah Carter scored 24 first-half points for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team Monday night, leading the Chargers to a 72-35 Red Rock Conference win over Red Rock Central in their regular-season finale.

Carter finished the night with 28 points, and Leah VanDeWiele heated up after halftime to finish with 17 for the Chargers.

Paige Wondercheck finished with 6 points and six rebounds for the Falcons and Celia Vogel added another 8 points.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove improves to 15-11 with the win and kicks off the 3A South subsection quarterfinals on Saturday when it takes on No. 4 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (14-12) in Worthington at 12:30 p.m. The two teams met in the Chargers’ final home game, when the Knights defeated WWG 57-56.

RRC enters sections as the No. 10 seed in the South bracket, and takes on No. 7 Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (11-14) in the pigtail game on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Fulda.

No. 10 HBC 59, MCC 42

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central girls basketball team gave No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek all it could handle Monday night in Red Rock Conference play, but the Patriots rallied in the second half to down MCC 59-42.

The Rebels built up a 27-26 lead at halftime, but the Patriots’ defense shut them down after the break. HBC shot 45% from the field and 3 of 11 (27%) from 3 in the game while holding MCC to 24% from the field and 4 of 26 (15%) from 3.

Calleigh Doeden was a rebounding machine for the Rebels, grabbing 15 total and eight offensive rebounds to lead the game in both categories. She also snagged seven steals in the loss and tied Ava Deacon with a team-high 9 points.

Kat Miller also put forth a well-rounded effort for MCC, grabbing six rebounds with five steals and 8 points.

MCC wraps up its regular season at 13-10 and enters the 3A tournament as the No. 3 seed, taking on No. 6 Edgerton (9-17) in the South subsection quarterfinals on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Worthington.

RTR 53, SWMC 46

TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team closed out its regular season in style Monday night, picking up a 53-46 Red Rock Conference win over Southwest Minnesota Christian.

RTR held a narrow 19-17 lead at halftime before Paisley Thooft caught fire after the break. The junior forward scored 15 of her 19 points after the break to help RTR pull away, while Makayla Hesse also scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half.

Hesse showed an elite ability to get to the line in the game, knocking down each of her 10 free throw attempts.

Brezlyn Buchert also contributed 11 points in the win.

RTR also fell 69-35 to Class 2A Pipestone on Saturday. Stats were unavailable at the time of print.

RTR clinches a winning record on the year with the win, improving to 14-12. The Knights enter the 3A tournament as the No. 4 seed, taking on No. 5 Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the South subsection quarterfinals Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Worthington.
