Prep girls basketball roundup Feb. 23, 2026
No. 5 WWG 52, No. 4 RTR 42
WORTHINGTON — Leah Carter’s 25-point outing powered the No. 5 Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team to a 52-42 win over No. 4 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in the Section 3A South subsection quarterfinals on Saturday in Worthington. The Knights finish their season with a winning record of 14-13 overall.
Carter came alive in the second half, scoring 16 of her points, to help get the Chargers in front for the come-from-behind win after trailing by 4 points at halftime.
RTR led 26-22 at the break, and hit a scoring drought that the Knights weren’t able to fully overcome.
WWG had six 3-pointers and went 8 of 15 from the foul line in the win, while RTR had two 3s and shot 4 of 13 from the free throw line.
Paisley Thooft led the Knights with 13 points, and Brezlyn Buchert followed with another 11. Makayla Hesse tallied 6 points.
For WWG alongside Carter, Leah VanDeWiele finished with 17 points with a team-high three 3-pointers, all of which came in the second half.
The Chargers went into Saturday looking to get revenge on RTR, after suffering a recent 57-56 loss to the Knights on Feb. 12.
RTR had a successful season, and notably went on a stretch in the regular season winning seven of nine games.
The Knights also made upward strides this season, winning three more games than last season when they finished 11-16 overall.
RTR graduates a strong core group of seniors in Ava Karbo, Buchert, Kendyle Breyfogle, Taya Christensen, Izabelle Thomas, Ava Guida and Jilian Schoenfeld.
WWG (16-11) next has the tall task of taking on top-seeded Hills-Beaver Creek (24-3) in the South’s subsection semifinals today at 5:45 p.m. back at Worthington High School. The winner of the game will advance to the subsection championship.
WWG and HBC have met twice over the regular season, where the Patriots won both matchups 79-53 on Jan. 22, and 66-45 on Feb 9.
No. 1 HBC 75, No. 8 TMB 40
WORTHINGTON — Gretchen Lnaoue and Melaina Ankrum combined for 25 points, but it wasn’t enough to power the No. 8 Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team to an upset in a 75-40 loss to No. 1 Hills-Beaver Creek on Saturday in the Section 3A South subsection quarterfinals.
TMB put up a fight and faced just a 9-point deficit at the break, but the Patriots found their footing and outscored the Panthers 42-16 in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Ankrum led the Panthers with six rebounds, five steals and three assists to her 12 points, while Lanoue had a team-high 13 points behind a trio of 3-pointers. Lanoue also had a pair of steals.
HBC outrebounded TMB 33-20, and shot 54% from the field while holding the Panthers to a 28% shooting mark.
Although TMB finishes its season 9-19 overall, an improvement from its 6-20 run last year, the Panthers will return their entire roster of talent next season with an older and now more-experienced lineup, after not holding a single senior this year.
No. 3 MCC 51, No. 6 Edgerton 44
WORTHINGTON — Ava Deacon’s team-highs of 19 points and six steals helped to lift the third-seeded Murray County Central girls basketball team to a 51-44 win over No. 6 Edgerton in the Section 3A South subsection quarterfinals on Saturday.
Deacon shot a team-best four 3-pointers, while Kate Blankenship led the Rebels with 10 rebounds along with her 6 points. Kat Miller added in another 8 points and six rebounds along with a team-high three assists.
The Rebels and Flying Dutchmen stayed within reach of one another the entire 36 minutes, and MCC went into the break with a slight 29-24 edge but was able to take care of business the rest of the way.
Reese VandeGriend led Edgerton with an 11-point, 15-rebound double-double.
Although MCC was outrebounded 41-30, the Rebels heavily made up for the difference on defense with 14 steals to the Flying Dutchmen’s three, to earn back a few possessions.
With the win, MCC next advances to the South’s subsection semifinals today back at Worthington.
The Rebels (14-10) will take on No. 2 Adrian-Ellsworth (18-9) at 7:30 p.m., and the winner will move onto Friday’s subsection championship.
The two teams have met twice over the regular season, each winning a game. A/E took the first matchup on Jan. 8 63-54, and the Rebels got their revenge in a 69-65 win on Feb. 2.
