Blackjacks come up short to Montevideo in top-10 battle

No. 2 Montevideo 70, No. 8 Dawson-Boyd 62

MONTEVIDEO — Jaxton Hastad and Gunner Liebl combined for 41 points for the No. 8 Dawson-Boyd basketball team on Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough for the Blackjacks as they fell 70-62 to Class 2A No. 2 Montevideo in a non-conference matchup.

Hastad scored a team-high 23 points on 9 of 17 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. His six assists were also second only to Liebl’s seven assists on one turnover, and he also grabbed five rebounds with a steal.

Liebl scored 18 points on 7 of 15 shooting. They were the only Blackjacks with more than 6 points in the game.

Ace Larson led Dawson-Boyd on the glass with seven rebounds and Landon Malecek contributed another six. Larson and Malecek each also blocked a shot on the night, while Larson came away with three steals.

Dawson-Boyd closes out its regular season at 20-5 and now awaits seeding for the Section 3A tournament. The North subsection quarterfinals will be played at Montevideo High School on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Edgerton 74, Lakeview 71

EDGERTON — The Lakeview boys basketball team dropped its final game of the regular season Thursday night, falling 74-71 to non-conference Edgerton despite 23 points from Cody Helmke.

The Lakers also got 14 points from Braylon Breyfogle and 11 from Ian Taylor in the loss.

Lakeview caps off its regular season at 9-16 and now awaits seeding for the Section 3A tournament. The North subsection play-in round begins on Thursday at the home site of the high seed.
