Xayarath, Voigt combine for 38 to lift Tigers over Waseca

WASECA — Oliver Voigt and Davion Xayarath combined for 38 points on Friday night as the Marshall boys basketball team cruised to a 57-38 Big South Conference win over Waseca.

Defensively, Marshall limited the Bluejays to 29% shooting from the field and 1 of 19 shooting from 3-point range. The Tigers shot 40% from the field and 3 of 13 from 3.

Voigt was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting, while Xayarath added another 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting, knocking down each of his two attempts from 3-point range.

Voigt grabbed eight total rebounds, four on each side of the floor, while Andrew Lee and JR Vierstraete each grabbed another five. Marshall outrebounded Waseca 35-21, including a 13-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Marshall improves to 8-9 on the season with the win and aims to get back to .500 when it heads across the border to take on Harrisburg (S.D.) on Monday at 7 p.m. Harrisburg is ranked No. 4 in South Dakota’s Class AA, the state’s largest class.

YME 62, Minneota 46

MINNEOTA — Kia GreyCloud’s 23-point performance helped the Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team end its five-game skid on Friday night with a 62-46 road win over Minneota in Camden Conference play.

GreyCloud shot 10 of 13 from the field and 2 of 4 from beyond the arc in the win, also grabbing five rebounds and tying Kolten Blankenhagen with a team-high three steals.

Also contributing offensively for the Sting, Cooper McCosh scored 15 points while Gunnar Fagen added another 14. Fagen’s 14 rebounds were also a team-high, while McCosh contributed a block on the defensive end.

Randy Sorensen was the lone Viking to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points, followed by 8 each from Easton Johnston and Seth Paluch.

Kyson Arndt and Tristen Sussner led the Vikings on the glass with five rebounds each.

YME improves to 3-13 on the year and plays its second of four straight road games on Monday when it takes on Canby (3-14) at 7:15 p.m.

Minneota falls to 4-14 and plays the second of a three-game homestand when it hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (11-6) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
