LUVERNE– The No. 7 Marshall girls hockey team has reclaimed the Big South Conference championship for the third consecutive year after defeating Luverne 6-1 Friday night to end the regular season. The win also marks 10 straight for the Tigers.
Marshall shared the conference title with Luverne and Minnesota River last season, but have taken the reigns outright this time around and finish with an 11-1 record in conference play. Marshall also won the conference in 2024, marking the first time since 2006.
The Tigers and Cardinals entered Friday with 10 conference wins, and was the third meeting between the two this season.
Brooklyn Mauch scored four goals to help lead Marshall to victory and finish a regular-season sweep over Luverne. The Tigers also defeated the Cardinals 6-1 on Dec. 4 and again on Tuesday of this week, 4-3.
Marshall took to action right away with a 2-0 lead following the first period with goals from Eme DeMuth and Mauch.
DeMuth scored unassisted on a power play in the sixth minute, while Abbey Foley and Peyton DeMuth found Mauch in the 16th minute right before the first intermission.
The Cardinals cut the score down to one goal after finding the net in the first minute of the second period, yet Peyton DeMuth found a quick answer and returned the favor with a goal to give Marshall back a 3-1 lead.
Mauch caught fire in the third period, rattling off three straight unanswered goals within five minutes of one another to help the Tigers prevail for the title.
Luverne also struggled with penalties, committing five on the night to Marshall’s two.
Foley finished with a team-high four assists, and Lily Stelter had another strong performance in the net with 32 saves on .970 save percentage.
The Cardinals slightly outshot Marshall 33-24.
Marshall (21-4) will now await seeding for the Section 3A Tournament, to be released in the coming days. The Tigers are looking to earn the top seed for the third season in a row.
