Tigers build 40 point halftime lead to cruise past Waseca

WASECA — The No. 4 Marshall girls basketball team built a 40-point halftime lead and forced 24 turnovers and grabbed 15 steals to cruise to a 73-23 Big South Conference win against Waseca Friday night on the road.

The Tigers couldn’t be stopped on either end of the court, as they shot nearly 50% from the field on 30 of 61 shooting and outrebounded Waseca 37-18.

Reese Drake led the Tigers with 16 points, four steals and eight assists on 7 for 11 shooting. Avery Schneekloth followed with 15 points while shooting 70% from the field, while Taleigha Bigler added in another 7 points with her five assists.

Danielle Nubile was also efficient on both ends of the floor with a trio of steals to her 7 points, and Avery Fahl had a team-high two blocks.

The Tigers held the Bluejays to just 23% field-goal shooting.

Marshall (17-2) has the tall task of taking on No. 2 Stewartville (17-1) today on the road with a 2:30 p.m. tip off in a battle of the Tigers.

WWG 67, HLOF 48

OKABENA — Leah Carter went off for 24 points on Friday night to lead the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team past Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda for a 67-48 Red Rock Conference victory.

Carter scored 4 points in the first half but caught fire in the second, scoring 20 to help the Chargers pull away after leading by 7 at the break.

Carlie Ross scored 10 first-half points to help WWG maintain an early lead and finished the night with 17 points.

WWG improves to 13-7 with the win and heads to Cottonwood for a non-conference game against Lakeview (17-4) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Canby 60, YME 49

GRANITE FALLS — A strong first-half from the Canby girls basketball team was enough to withstand a second-half push from Yellow Medicine East on Friday night as the Lancers held on for a 60-49 Camden Conference win over the Sting.

Bailey Mortenson led YME with 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting and Bayli Sneller added another 13 points. Mortenson’s 11 rebounds were also second only to Alana Almich’s 13.

Stats were not available at the time of print for Canby.

Canby improves to 9-12 with the win and hosts Renville County West (4-13) for its final home game of the season on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

YME falls to 6-14 and aims to end its four-game skid when it heads out on the road to take on Minneota (13-6) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Lakeview 75, RCW 55

RENVILLE — Brynn Stensrud and Anah Schmidt combined for 44 points to power the Lakeview girls basketball team to a 75-55 win over Renville County West Friday night.

Schmidt led the way with a 23-point, 13-rebound double-double and two blocks, while Stensrud finished with 23 points with a trio of 3-pointers, and a team-high five assists and four steals.

Addy Jorgenson also tallied 9 points with six rebounds and three steals.

Lakeview finished the night shooting 38% from the field and went 16 for 19 at the foul line. The Lakers also grabbed 14 steals.

Lakeview (18-4) will next travel to take on Arlington, S.D., today at 7 p.m.

Minneota 63, TMB 58

TRACY — Four players scored in double figures to help the Minneota girls basketball team prevail for a 63-58 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Friday night in a back-and-forth battle.

Eden Meagher did a little bit of everything and finished with a double-double for the Vikings with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds and six steals.

Autum Anderson led Minneota offensively with 18 points and shot 7 for 10 at the free throw line. Jaylyn Coequyt also added another 14 points and nine rebounds, while Ava Rost finished with 11 points.

Gretchen Lanoue led the Panthers with a game-high 20 points on 50% shooting, along with eight rebounds.

Melaina Ankrum followed with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Lanoue, Elsie Knott and Lauren Knakmuhs all had three steals on the night.

TMB finished with 17 steals to Minneota’s 10, yet the Vikings outrebounded the Panthers 27-19.

Minneota (14-6) will look to win its sixth-straight game when it travels to BOLD (15-4) on Monday at 7 p.m.

TMB (8-12) will hit the road to Windom (15-6), also on Monday at 7:15 p.m.

MCC 59, SWMC 35

EDGERTON — A balanced scoring effort from the Murray County Central girls basketball team translated to a victory on Friday as the Rebels defeated Southwest Minnesota Christian 59-35 in Red Rock Conference play.

Ava Deacon was the Rebels’ leading scorer with 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting, while Kat Miller and Kate Blankenship each added another 9 points.

Miller led the Rebels on the glass with eight rebounds, and her three 3-point makes on four attempts were also a team-high.

Deacon and Reese Gilbertson each snagged five steals on the night while Joelle Hellewell blocked a shot.

MCC improves to 9-9 and looks to get back above .500 when it hosts Adrian/Ellsworth (13-8) on Monday at 7:15 p.m. The Dragons defeated the Rebels 63-54 when the two teams met back on Jan. 8 in Adrian.

KMS 81, DB 56

DAWSON — The Fighting Saints had too much offense for the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball to contain on Friday night as the Blackjacks fell 81-56 in Camden Conference play.

Claire Stratmoen led the Dawson-Boyd scorers with 19 points on 7 of 18 shooting and Alyssa Swedzinski added another 15 points on 6 of 15 shooting. Kylar Hjelmeland also finished in double figures with 12 points, as well as 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Alivia Estling grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds, and her three assists tied Helmeland for second on the team to Laura Schreier’s four.

Stratmoen and Hjelmeland each came away with three steals in the game.

Dawson-Boyd falls to 9-11 on the year and heads to Prinsburg for its next game against No. 8 Central Minnesota Christian (14-2) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
