Rebels survive against RTR behind lockdown defense

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central boys basketball team blocked five shots and held the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team to 15% shooting from the field on Thursday night as the Rebels picked up a 39-34 win over the Knights in Red Rock Conference play.

Aidan Swenson and Wyatt Thompson each blocked two shots in the win for the Rebels. Swenson’s 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting were also a team-high and his eight rebounds trailed only Thompson’s 11.

As a team, MCC shot 35% from the field and knocked down four of its nine attempts from beyond the arc.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (6-6) heads to Lamberton on Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (4-8) at 4:15 p.m., while Murray County Central (7-4) wraps up its three-game homestand against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (2-9) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

No. 9 Wabasso at BLHS

BUFFALO LAKE — The ninth-ranked Wabasso boys basketball team had tripled up Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart by halftime on Thursday, going up 49-16 at the midway mark and cruising to a 93-34 Tomahawk Conference win.

Brayden Guetter led the way offensively for the Rabbits with 29 points on 12 of 20 shooting. Caden Frericks was also a perfect 8 of 8 from the field with 16 points and Tavyn Larson and Brady Baune each added another 12 points.

Frericks once again cleaned both sides of the glass with four offensive and 13 total rebounds to pace Wabasso. He also had two steals on the night.

Drew Kemp dished out seven assists with three steals while Jayden Remiger led the defense with five steals.

Wabasso (13-0) aims to remain undefeated when it returns to its home court on Monday for a non-conference game against Canby (1-10) at 7:30 p.m.

No. 5 HBC 71, WWG 56

HILLS — The balanced offense of the No. 5 Hills-Beaver Creek boys basketball team was too much for Westbrook-Walnut Grove to handle on Thursday night as the Chargers fell 71-56 in Red Rock Conference play.

Jackson Jenniges knocked down five 3-pointers to pace WWG with 19 points in the game while Drew Swanson added another 13 points. HBC finished with four scorers in double figures, three of which scored at least 16 points.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (7-5) travels to Lamberton for its next game, taking on Sleepy Eye (8-4) on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

Edgerton 74, RRC 51

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central boys basketball team came up short 74-51 to Edgerton Thrusday night in a Red Rock Conference matchup.

Henry Stavnes stuffed the stat sheet for the Falcons, finishing with 34 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Red Rock Central (3-11) hosts the 12-team Crossover Games this weekend. The Falcons kick off the six-game event with an 11 a.m. matchup against Martin County West (1-13) on Saturday.
