MARSHALL — A six-match win streak and pins from Lincoln Christenson, Brayden Chandler and Tyler Kraft helped Marshall earn a 37-22 Big South Conference dual over Jackson County Central on Thursday night.

“You set the tone, you go out and you’re looking for your offense and you’re looking to score right away,” Marshall head coach Ethan Hoppe said of his team’s performance. “Some of those guys might have been down in the first, but they kept battling. It’s a six-minute match, give yourself the opportunity to win, and we had a handful of those guys do that tonight.”

The Tigers picked up their first lead of the dual after Lincoln Christianson won by fall in 121. It took Christianson mere seconds to get Ever Mazariegos onto the mat, and he capitalized from there with a pin just over a minute into the match to give Marshall a 9-6 edge.

Keynan Coequyt kept the Marshall momentum flowing in the next match, getting stronger each period. He lifted Mathias Liepold into a takedown in the first period, and got an escape and a takedown in the second to earn a 4-0 lead. Coequyt didn’t let up from there, continuing to pile on points until he earned a 15-0 technical fall with 54 seconds left.

Brayden Chandler and Tyler Kraft earned consecutive quick pins in 172 and 189, respectively, to clinch the dual for the Tigers. Chandler got JCC’s Ryan Fricke onto the ground in a matter of seconds to earn a pin in 44 seconds, while Kraft followed up with a pin of Hayden Schultz in 1:40 to put the finishing touches on the victory.

Levi Kraft trailed 4-3 in the waning seconds of the second period of his 133-pound match against Dezmynd Tupper, but shifted momentum with a reversal to take a 5-4 lead into the third. He was nearly unstoppable from there, getting a quick takedown and a nearfall to eventually claim a 13-4 major decision.

“I felt that he was a little gassed, so I decided that I might as well just keep going and keep pushing hard, and I came out with the win,” Kraft said of the turnaround.

Andrew Yang and Colten Gossen were evenly matched in 114, with Yang holding a 3-2 lead through the first two periods. After starting the third period below, Yang came up with an escape and a takedown to earn a 7-2 decision and 3 points for Marshall.

McCoy Marthaler got an early takedown in 107, but Payten Sorbel responded with an escape and a takedown of his own, eventually resulting in Sorbel pinning Marthaler with 28 seconds remaining in the first period. Despite the loss in the dual’s opening match, the Tigers won each of the next six matches to seize control of the dual.

The winning streak ended in 152, in which Tyson Louwagie took on Dallas Gossen. Louwagie built up a 6-5 lead after the first two periods and held off Gossen for most of the third, but Gossen came up with a key reversal with 20 seconds remaining to earn a 7-6 decision and cut the dual deficit to 25-9.

Colton Chandler, taking on Braxsten Hall in 139, found some momentum in the second period after a scoreless first. Starting on the bottom, Chandler got an escape before he was taken down by Hall, but a Chandler reversal just before the buzzer gave him a 6-3 lead heading into the third. Chandler held on from there for a 9-4 decision.

Dawson DeCamp got a takedown in the first period and another pair in the second of his 145-pound match against Geovany Munoz, giving him a 9-2 lead heading into the third, and he came away with a 16-3 major decision.

With the match sealed for Marshall, JCC took the day’s final pair of matches with Carson Kolander pinning Ethan Mattison in 2:39 and Cael Entriken earning a 6-2 decision over Felix Kelsey in the heavyweight behind a last-second takedown.

Evan Bartholomaus took control of the 165-pound match against Gavin Williams early and never looked back, claiming a 12-4 major decision to earn 4 points for the Huskies.

Marshall improves to 12-2 on the year with the win and now preps for the individual Big South Conference tournament, which it will be hosting on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The mindset shifts a little due to the fact that it’s an individual tournament but the Tigers are still looking to work together for the aspect of scoring team points in it, Hoppe said.

“Our goal is to get as many guys as we can to place in the Big South. It’s a heck of a tough tournament, it’s a tough conference to wrestle in,” Hoppe said. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have good showings the last two years, and our goal is to keep it going.”
