Marshall limits Cougars to 2 first-half points in lopsided win

MANKATO — The No. 6 Marshall girls basketball team only allowed 2 first-half points with a 50-point halftime lead and cruised to a 63-14 win over Mankato East on Saturday. Taleigha Bigler led the Tigers with 17 points behind a trio of 3-pointers and eight steals.
Marshall flew to a 52-2 lead at halftime and played its reserves throughout the second half.
Avery Schneekloth followed Bigler with 15 points with a team-high three blocks, while Avery finished with 9 points behind three 3-pointers. Reese Drake also did a little bit of everything with 10 points, a team-high five assists with four steals. Danielle Nubile led the Tigers with seven rebounds.
Marshall made its presence known from deep, shooting 8 of 19 for 42%. Maddie Panka also drilled in a pair of 3s, going 2 of 3.
The Tigers’ tenacious defensive effort once again shined early and throughout, forcing 27 turnovers and grabbing 21 steals. Marshall committed 10 turnovers.
Marshall moves to 11-2 on the season, and will look for its seventh-straight win when it hosts Mankato West (7-6) today at 6 p.m.
Lakeview 66, Canby 58
CANBY — Anah Schmidt and Brook Gunlogson combined for 34 points to help the Lakeview girls basketball team prevail for a 66-58 win over Canby Saturday afternoon in a competitive battle on both ends of the floor that saw seven lead changes.
The Lancers had a 33-31 edge at halftime, yet the Lakers’ shooting efficiency made the difference down the stretch to pull away late for the victory.
Lakeview finished the night shooting 41% from the field and limited Canby to 28%.
Canby’s Brynn Kockelman led all scorers with 22 points and had the hot hand from deep with six 3-pointers, along with her seven rebounds. Her and Ella Thovson both shot 50% from the field, going 8 of 16 and 3 of 6, respectively. Thovson finished with 9 points.
Ava Danielson followed with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds with a pair of steals.
For the Lakers, Schmidt led the way with another double-double of 19 points on 57% shooting, shooting 8 of 14 from the field, and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Gunlogson followed with 15 points and shared a team-high three steals with Kiannalee Olson.
Canby outrebounded Lakeview 41-37, but the Lakers returned the favor with eight steals to the Lancers’ six for a defensively-competitive matchup.
Lakeview 72, LQPV 52
MADISON — Brynn Stensrud shot a perfect 4 for 4 from the perimeter with a team-high 24 points and seven steals to lead the Lakeview girls basketball team to a 72-52 win over Lac qui Parle Valley Monday night.
Stensrud shot efficiently everywhere on the court, going 10 of 16 from the field for a 62% mark. Anah Schmidt added in another 18 points with a team-high seven rebounds. Brook Gunglogson led with four assists to her five steals as well.
Lakeview (12-3) will next return home to host MACCRAY (8-4) on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
Dawson-Boyd 57, RCW 52
DAWSON — Kylar Hjelmeland’s 20 points helped the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team prevail for a 57-52 win over Renville County West Monday night. The win brings the Blackjacks back to .500 for the first time since their first game.
Alyssa Swedzinski led the Blackjacks with eight rebounds to her 6 points as well, while Claire Stratmoen added another 7 points to her five rebounds and two steals.
Dawson-Boyd (7-7) will look to pick up its fourth-straight win when it travels to Minneota (7-5) today at 7:15 p.m.
YME 88, Ortonville 32
ORTONVILLE — The Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team had four players score at least 17 points on Monday night as the Sting picked up an 88-32 Camden Conference win over Ortonville.
Bailey Mortenson led the Sting with 30 points on 14 of 17 shooting. Her 14 total rebounds, six offensive rebounds and eight steals were all team-highs as well, and her one block tied her with Alana Almich for second on the team to Abby Gullickson’s three.
Almich also scored 20 points for the Sting while Bayli Sneller and Charlotte Paslawski contributed 19 and 17, respectively.
Sneller was the Sting’s primary floor-spacers, shooting 5 of 10 from 3-point range. Sneller and Paslawski each snagged four steals while Almich grabbed seven rebounds.
YME improves to 5-9 and hosts No. 6 Central Minnesota Christian (8-1) for its next game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Wabasso 72, GFW 58
WABASSO — Kenley Guetter’s team-high 24-point, 19-rebound double-double led the Wabasso girls basketball team in a 72-58 win over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Monday night. Guetter also led the team with six assists and four steals.
Sara Carlson followed with 15 after shooting 3 for 4 from deep, while Cassie Bliss finished with 13 points.
Ava Samyn grabbed 10 rebounds along with her five points.
Wabasso (6-9) will next travel to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (5-4) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
No. 6 CMC 71, Minneota 31
PRINSBURG — The Minneota girls basketball team had no answer for the sixth-ranked Central Minnesota Christian Bluejays on Monday, falling 71-31 in Camden Conference play.
Ava Rost and Jaylyn Coequyt led the Minneota scorers with 9 and 6 points, respectively. Coequyt’s eight rebounds were also a team-high while Eden Meagher led the defense with four steals.
Minneota falls to 7-5 with the loss and hosts Dawson-Boyd (6-7) for its next game tonight at 7:15 p.m.
HLOF 71, RRC 23
LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team fell 71-23 to Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Saturday in Red Rock Conference play.
Paige Wondercheck grabbed 10 rebounds with 4 points in the loss while Kendra Schroeder added 6 points and five boards.
Mankato Loyola 52,

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team couldn’t get back in the win column on Monday, dropping 52-27 to Mankato Loyola in a non-conference matchup.
Kysha Wani was the Falcons’ leading scorer with 8 points, followed by Paige Wondercheck’s 6 points with six rebounds. Celia Vogel also grabbed eight rebounds with 4 points.
RRC falls to 0-14 and looks to get into the win column when it hosts Murray County Central (6-6) for the third of four consecutive home games for the Falcons tonight at 7:30 p.m.
WWG 57, Worthington 50
WORTHINGTON –The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team picked up a 57-50 non-conference win over Worthington on Monday night, boosting the Chargers back up above .500 on the season.
Leah Carter led the Chargers with 18 points in the win while Carlie Ross and Leah VanDeWiele added 9 and 8, respectively.
WWG now sits at 7-6 on the year and returns to its home court tonight to host Edgerton (6-9) at 7:15 p.m.
