NEW ULM — After Tuesday night’s loss at home to New Ulm, the Marshall Tigers had a better idea of what to expect from the Eagles in Thursday’s rematch at the New Ulm Civic Center.

But despite a busy and strong night in net by Tigers goalie Kirby Meulebroeck, the end result was much the same as the Eagles skated away with a 6-0 shutout in a Big South Conference boys hockey game.

New Ulm defeated Marshall 12-3 on Tuesday in Marshall and the quick turnaround rematch didn’t make the Eagles any less aggressive. Meulebroeck did his best to keep the game manageable, but the Tigers were unable to generate much offense on the other end.

Cason Uecker led the Eagles in the win with two goals, while Brody Nordby and Mason Buegler each had two assists. Eagles goalie Blaine Arneson had 10 saves to preserve his shutout.

New Ulm got the board reflectively quick when Uecker got a pass from Nordby and scored from the slot for a 1-0 lead at 4:05 of the first period.

Moments later, the Eagles struck again, courtesy of Alex Winter. After taking a pass in the slot by Buegler, Winter quickly flipped it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead at 6:26 of the period. At 9:09 of the period, the Eagles went up 3-0 when Hunter Larson found the net on assists by Buegler and Mason Sellner.

The Eagles outshot the Tigers 23-2 in the period.

Marshall got more shots off the first eight minutes of the second period, but only one shot was on goal off the stick of Ethan Jiscoot. That shot was glove saved by Arneson.

A goal by Braxton Rahe on an assist by Connor Meier made it a 4-0 game with 8:04 left in the period, which ended up being the only goal of the period.

New Ulm had multiple chances after that but Meulebroeck continued making tough saves. After the Eagles drew the first penalty of the game on an interference with 4:37 left in the second, they took a timeout to reassess and make a plan on the power play.

Meulebroeck made four saves during the power play to kill it, however, keeping his team within reach.

Hungry to get something going offensively, Brendan Price followed that power-play kill with a shot from outside the blue line, but it was easily knocked away by Arneson.

Meulebroeck made three more saves the final minute of the period as the Eagles carried a 41-6 shots-on-goal advantage into the third.

After another solid eight minutes of goalie play by Meulebroeck, a pass from Bobby Rewitzer set up Jaxon Saenz for a one-on-one opportunity at the net. Saenz was able to get a shot by Meulebroeck for a goal at 10:02 of the third period for a short-handed goal and 5-0 lead.

Uecker tacked on another goal to close things out on another assist by Nordby at 11:56 of the third.

New Ulm was 0 for 5 on the power play, while Marshall was 0 for 1 after drawing a five-minute major penalty on a check from behind.

The Eagles moved to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play with the win, while the Tigers fell to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the conference. It was also New Ulm’s fourth win in a row and third shutout of the four wins.

Marshall hosts Owatonna at 2 p.m. Saturday.
