Chandler’s ranked win, Coequyt’s 60th victory help Tigers to quad sweep

MARSHALL — Keynan Coequyt reached another milestone on Thursday night as the Marshall boys wrestling team swept its home quadrangular. The 127-pound junior picked up two wins by forfeit and another by fall, making him the lone Tiger to earn the full max of 18 points on the day as Marshall earned a 44-21 win over Waseca, a 49-22 win over the Martin County Red Bulls and a 42-21 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

David Schuh of TMB/WWG, ranked No. 2 in Class A, also earned a career milestone, earning his 200th career win with a 6-3 decision over Dawson DeCamp.

“Dawson’s right there with the best of them. Obviously you want to come away with that victory, but we’re close,” Marshall head coach Ethan Hoppe said. “It’s not the outcome he wanted, but he’s there and he’s battling, which is great to see.”

Cole Condezo earned his first varsity victory in style, pinning TMB/WWG’s Tyler Arnold in 1:42 to get in the win column.

Coequyt’s 60th win came via forfeit against Martin County. He also pinned Class A No. 6 Logan Petersen in 1:05 in the Tigers’ dual against TMB/WWG.

No. 6AA Brayden Chandler got a pair of pins in the Tigers’ duals against Waseca and TMB/WWG, but perhaps his most impressive win of the day came via 11-8 decision against Martin County. Taking on also sixth-ranked Torrey Paplow in 160, Chandler faced a 3-0 deficit coming out of the first period. Yet, he turned the tide with a forceful takedown and a 4-point nearfall in the second period.

“I just kind of realized he was a really smart [wrestler], he knew what I wanted to do and he countered it hard, so I thought I had to try and get it, but when it wasn’t working, I had to switch it up and try to get something else,” Chandler said.

The two exchanged reversals in the third period to give Chandler a 10-5 lead late in the frame. Paplow got a takedown to cut the deficit to 11-8, but Chandler maintained his lead to pick up 3 points for the Tigers.

Chandler added that when he faces state-level opponents like that, he tries to just approach it like any other match, but that it felt great after he sealed the victory.

“You’ve got two high-ranked guys, just two hammer studs going at it to come out on top of that one,” Hoppe said. “That was an exciting match to watch with guys flying to their backs and stuff, so that’s always fun.”

No. 2AA Lincoln Christenson earned another 17 points for Marshall with two wins via forfeit and a technical fall, while No. 10AA Tyson Louwagie finished with 15 points after earning a pin, a technical fall and a major decision.

TMB/WWG earned a 39-33 win over Martin County as well, with Ethan Johnson, Taylor Squires, Weston Marten and Lawton Verlinde each earning pins.

Marshall improves to 15-2 on the year after the sweep and next competes at the Hutchinson Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m.
