Carter sets WWG rebounds record

WWG 80, YME 60

WESTBROOK — Leah Carter set the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball career rebounding record on Monday night as the Chargers earned an 80-60 non-conference win over Yellow Medicine East.

Carter now has 952 career boards after surpassing the previous record of 942. She also was WWG’s leading scorer in the game with 25 points while Carli Ross added another 20 points.

Bayli Sneller, Bailey Mortenson and Charlotte Paslawski each scored 14 points for YME in the loss while Alana Almich added another 12. Mortenson and Almich also grabbed 14 and 13 rebounds, respectively, with six of Mortenson’s coming on the offensive glass.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove improves to 11-7 and hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (9-7) tonight at 7:30 p.m., while Yellow Medicine East falls to 6-12 and hosts Lakeview (15-4) tonight at the same time.

Minneota 62, SWMC 55

MINNEOTA — Sarah Gruenes and Jaylyn Coequyt powered the Minneota girls basketball team to a 62-55 win over Southwest Minnesota Christian Monday night with a combined 35 points and eight steals.

Coequyt led the way with 19 points and went 7 for 8 from the foul line, along with six rebounds and three steals. Gruenes followed with 16 points and shot 3 for 3 from the perimeter, to her four steals.

Autum Anderson led the Vikings with six assists and five steals while adding in another 5 points, and Eden Meagher finished with a team-high seven rebounds.

The Vikings forced 40 turnovers while committing 32 themselves, and although the Eagles had nine 3-pointers to Minneota’s four, the Vikings helped to make up the difference with a strong performance at the free throw line.

Minneota finished the night shooting 14 of 17 from the charity stripe, and also had 17 steals to SWMC’s 13.

The win marks three straight for the Vikings (11-6), who will make it four when they travel to take on Canby (8-10) today at 7:15 p.m.

MACCRAY 75, Dawson-Boyd 43

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team suffered a 75-43 loss behind a second-half surge to MACCRAY Monday night. The Blackjacks were outshot 41-23 throughout the second half.

Alivia Estling led the team with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. Alyssa Swedzinki followed with another 13 points and shot a team-high three 3-pointers, along with six rebounds.

Kylar Hjelmeland finished with nine rebounds to her 7 points, while Claire Stratmoen tallied 6 points to her seven boards.

Dawson-Boyd (8-10) will look to get back in the win column when it travels to Wabasso (6-14) at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
