Anderson, Jerzak combine for 28 in Vikings’ win over Lancers

Minneota 53, Canby 49

CANBY — Autum Anderson and Jayla Jerzak each scored 14 points to help lift the Minneota girls basketball team to a 53-49 Camden Conference win over Canby after a back-and-forth battle.

The Lancers held Jaylyn Coequyt, Minneota’s leading scorer, to just 2 points on the night.

With Coequyt being limited, other Vikings stepped up to the challenge to showcase the team’s depth.

Along with Anderson and Jerzak, Ava Rost also finished in double-figure scoring with 10 points. Jerzak also had a team-high six rebounds, while Anderson led with four steals.

Canby and Minneota were nearly locked in with one another on the shooting end in all areas of the court. Both teams had just three 3-pointers, while the Lancers shot 27% from the field to the Vikings’ 25%.

The game was also a battle at the foul line, with the two teams shooting a combined 51 free throw attempts.

Canby shot 16 of 25 from the free throw line, while Minneota went 18 of 26.

For the Lancers, Ava Danielson led the way with 21 points on 53% shooting to her eight rebounds. Brynn Kockelman followed with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

One of the game’s difference makers was Minneota’s 10 steals to Canby’s four, while forcing 22 Lancer turnovers. The Vikings finished with 11 turnovers.

Canby however, outrebounded Minneota 36-29.

It was also a competitive battle when the two teams first met in the season opener on Dec. 2, where the Vikings came away with a 61-60 win in the final seconds.

Minneota (12-6) looks to extend its winning streak to five games when it travels to Tracy for a game against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (7-11) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Canby (8-11) hits the road for a matchup against Luverne (8-10) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

A/E 62, RTR 53

ADRIAN — Makayla Hesse and Paisley Thooft’s combined 31 points still left the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team short of a victory on Tuesday as the Knights fell 62-53 to Adrian/Ellsworth in Red Rock Conference play.

Hesse finished with 16 points, including four made 3-pointers, while Thooft added another 15 points. Brezlyn Buchert and Ava Karbo contributed 8 points each.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (10-8) returns to action on Thursday when it heads to Lamberton to take on Red Rock Central (0-19) at 5 p.m.

TMB 70, RCW 44

TRACY — Gretchen Lanoue and Melaina Ankrum each scored 22 points for the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team on Tuesday as the Panthers cruised to a 70-44 Camden Conference win over Renville County West.

Lanoue and Ankrum each knocked down three 3-pointers in the game, coming on three attempts for Lanoue and five for Ankrum. Lanoue shot 8 of 14 from the field while Ankrum shot 8 of 19.

Lanoue also finished the night as TMB’s team leader in rebounds with 13 and steals with five. Ankrum and Lanoue also tied for a team-high with four assists, coming on just one turnover for Lanoue.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (7-11) remains on its home court for its third consecutive home game when it hosts Southwest Minnesota Christian (3-13) for a non-conference matchup on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Lakeview 84, YME 55

GRANITE FALLS — Brynn Stensrud’s 30 points powered the Lakeview girls basketball team to an 84-55 Camden Conference win over Yellow Medicine East Tuesday night. Stensrud shot 55% from the field, and wnet 4 of 9 from deep.

Addyson Jorgenson followed with 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting, while Brook Gunlogson and Anah Schmidt each tallied another 11 points as well. Gunlogson and Jorgenson both shot 50% from the perimeter as well, going 3 for 6 and 2 of 4, respectively.

Schmidt led the Lakers on the glass with eight rebounds.

Along with its efficient shooting all around, Lakeview also played with a valiant defensive effort with 22 steals. Jorgenson led with six steals, while Gunlogson grabbed another four. Stensrud, Emma Brusven and Brynn Lundin all had another three steals as well.

Alana Almich led the Sting with 25 points on 10 of 12 shooting from the field and 5 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc. Her seven rebounds were also second only to Bailey Mortenson’s nine, and each of the two forwards logged a block.

Lakeview (16-4) next takes on Renville County West (4-11) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Yellow Medicine East (6-13) remains in Granite Falls to host Canby (8-10) on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

MCC 58, Edgerton 41

EDGERTON — Ava Deacon’s hot shooting from long range helped the Murray County Central girls basketball team pull away against Edgerton for a 58-41 Red Rock Conference win on Tuesday.

Deacon scored a game-high 24 points, shooting 5 of 11 from beyond the arc. She also made a defensive impact with four steals.

Kate Blankenship led MCC on the glass with nine rebounds while Kat Miller’s three offensive boards were a team-high. Blankenship and Miller also scored 10 and 13 points, respectively, with Miller shooting 5 of 10 from the field and 3 of 7 from 3-point range.

Murray County Central (8-9) looks to get back to .500 when it heads to Edgerton to take on Southwest Minnesota Christian (3-13) on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

WWG 51, MLAC 49

WESTBROOK — A balanced scoring effort from the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team, combined with another strong rebounding performance from Leah Carter, propelled the Chargers to a 51-49 win over Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey on Tuesday night.

A day after breaking the WWG career rebounding record, Carter grabbed another 19 rebounds with 11 points. Hadley Jenniges finished as the Chargers’ leading scorer with 14 points and Carlie Ross added another 13.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (12-7) hosts its third consecutive home game when it takes on Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (10-7) on Friday at 7 p.m.

SWMC 59, RRC 20

EDGERTON — Red Rock Central got rolling into a busy week on Tuesday, but fell short in Red Rock Conference play with a 59-20 loss to Southwest Minnesota Christian.

Lilly Batalden and Paige Wondercheck led RRC on the day with seven rebounds and 3 points each.

Red Rock Central (0-19) will attempt to get into the win column when it hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (10-7) on Thursday at 5 p.m.

No. 2 SESM 92, Wabasso 32

WABASSO — The Wabasso girls basketball team struggled to find an answer to stop No. 2 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a 92-32 Tomahawk Conference loss Tuesday night.

Stats for Wabasso were unavailable at the time of print.

Wabasso (6-15) aims to end its six-game skid when it hosts Dawson-Boyd (8-10) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
