Tigers survive early deficit in 6-3 win over Fargo N/S

FARGO — Brooklyn Mauch notched 4 points for the Marshall girls hockey team on Tuesday as the 11th-ranked Tigers picked up a 6-3 win over Fargo North/South to sweep their holiday tournament.
The Tigers trailed 2-1 after Fargo scored with three-and-a-half minutes to play in the first period when Mauch caught fire. She scored her first goal of the day on a power play just a minute later, capitalizing on a feed from Lucie Pearson, and then scored an unassisted go-ahead goal a minute later to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead after the first frame.
Mauch finished the night with her second consecutive hat trick as well as an assist. She completed the hat trick four minutes into the third period off an assist from Abbey Foley and Peyton DeMuth, and she assisted DeMuth on the Tigers’ first goal of the night to tie the score up at 1-1 eight minutes into the first period.
DeMuth scored her second goal of the night off an assist from Nora Holmgren five minutes into the third period to give Marshall a 5-3 lead.
Lily Stelter made 30 saves in goal on the night to finish with a .909 save percentage. The Tigers outshot Fargo 33-30.
Ava Kolander scored an unassisted goal with 1:39 remaining in the third period.
Marshall improves to 14-4-0 with the win and returns to conference play on Saturday at noon for a road matchup against Minnesota River. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 3-2 in overtime when the teams last met on Dec. 20 despite a pair of goals from Mauch.

WEST FARGO, N.D. — An early shorthanded goal wasn’t enough to spark momentum for the Marshall boys hockey team on Tuesday as the Tigers allowed five unanswered goals to close out a 6-1 loss to Bismarck Century in the West Fargo Winter Classic.
Marshall trailed 1-0 for the majority of the first period before Jacob Allen scored an unassisted shorthanded goal on the power play with 9:45 remaining in the frame. Yet, Bismarck’s Cason Hagerott scored a pair of goals to end the period with a 3-1 Patriot lead and Bismarck never looked back.
Colby Allen made 31 saves in goal for Marshall on 37 shots faced, but Bismarck outshot Marshall 37-17 on the day to dominate all momentum.
The Tigers spent 18 minutes in the penalty box on nine minors, compared to 12 penalty minutes on six minor penalties for Bismarck
Marshall falls to 2-9-0 with the loss and goes on the road to take on Minnesota River for its next game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
