Swedzinski’s 24 lead Blackjacks to 2nd straight win

MARSHALL — Alyssa Swedzinski knocked down five 3-pointers to finish with 24 points and lead the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team to victory on Tuesday night. The Blackjacks held off Grenada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther in a back-and-forth battle, eventually prevailing with a 63-61 win.

Dawson-Boyd also earned a 75-20 win over Ortonville in its last game on Dec. 23. The pair of wins mark the Blackjacks’ first consecutive victories since they won three in a row from Dec. 17 through Jan. 7 last season.

In addition to her scoring contributions, shooting 7 of 17 from the field and 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, Swedzinski’s six rebounds were also third on the team behind Alivia Estling’s eight and Kylar Hjelmeland’s seven. On the defensive end, Swedzinski’s one steal tied Laura Schreier and Kadyn Perkins for second to Claire Stratmoen’s four.

Stratmoen and Estling each scored 13 points on 4 of 14 and 6 of 14 shooting, respectively. Schreier also added 6 points and a block.

Dawson-Boyd improves to 3-6 on the season and heads to Madison to take on Lac qui Parle Valley (2-5) on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Lakeview 61, Benson 35

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview girls basketball team got back in the win column with a dominant 61-35 defeat over Benson Tuesday night, powered by Anah Schmidt’s team-high 24-point, 13-rebound double-double.

The Lakers were strong on the rebounding end with 42 boards, 25 of which were defensive, and also had 18 assists on their 23 made field goals.

Schmidt’s 24 points came on 62% shooting, going 10 of 16 from the field, while Brynn Stensrud followed with another 14 points and a team-high five assists.

Emma Brusven also had 9 points, shooting 4 of 6, while Reagan Bossuyt and Aubrey Nething each grabbed another five rebounds. Bossuyt also had four assists.

Lakeview (8-2) will have a few days off before hosting Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (6-4) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

RCW 73, RRC 32

LAMBERTON –The Red Rock Central girls basketball team couldn’t pick up its first win of the year on Tuesday, falling 73-32 to Renville County West in non-conference play.

Paige Wondercheck and Kendra Schroeder led RRC with 8 points each, as well as six rebounds for Wondercheck and five for Schroeder.

RRC falls to 10-0 and next plays Saturday when it hosts Wabasso (3-7) at 6 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

WWG 73, Canby 68

CANBY — Drew Swanson erupted for 32 points for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team on Tuesday night, propelling the Chargers to a 73-68 non-conference win over Canby.

Swanson shot 10 of 25 from the field while knocking down three of his nine attempts from beyond the arc. His eight total and three offensive rebounds also trailed only Jackson Jenniges’ nine total and four offensive rebounds.

Jenniges tied Neil Kuehl as the team’s second-leading scorer with 13 points each, and Jenniges dished out four assists.

Owen Peterson led Canby with 21 points on 8 of 18 shooting while Jace Rangaard and Casey Hoiland contributed 16 and 14 points, respectively. Will Abrahamson also scored 7 points with seven rebounds and five assists.

WWG improves to 5-2 with the win and hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (3-4) for its next game on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Nicollet 76, YME 34

COTTONWOOD — A well-balanced scoring effort wasn’t quite enough as the Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team suffered a 76-34 loss to Nicollett on Tuesday at Lakeview’s holiday tournament.

Jack Mensink led the Sting with a double-double performance of 11 points and 10 rebounds, eight from the defensive board.

Cooper McCosh and Gavin Torvik each added another 6 points, with McCosh grabbing six rebounds and Torvik a team-high four steals.

YME outrebounded Nicollet 27-20 overall, but struggled on the shooting end. The Sting finished the night shooting 31% from the field while the Raiders shot 47%.

The Sting (1-7) will next host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (5-2) next Tuesday with a 7:15 p.m. tipoff.

RCW 66, RRC 36

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central boys basketball team was defeated 66-36 Tuesday night by Renville County West.

The Falcons were led by Finn Batalden’s 17 points and Carter Therkilsen’s 10 rebounds.

Red Rock Central (0-7) will next return to the court when it hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (1-5) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
