SMSU volleyball earns four CSC Academic All-District selections
MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball’s Karli Arkell, McKenzie Tolk, Leah Jones and Ashley Peltier each earned Academic All-District honors, announced on Tuesday. The selection was the third for Arkell, the second for Tolk and the first for Jones and Peltier.
The CSC Academic All-District teams recognize athletes in Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA for a combination of athletic and academic performance. Honorees must maintain a 3.50 GPA.
Jones, a 2023 Marshall High School graduate in her junior year at SMSU, was named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team for the second time and the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Central Region first-team for the first time this year. She logged a team-leading 401 kills on a .263 hitting percentage and 223 digs to finish fifth on the team.
Tolk was SMSU’s defensive leader this season, tallying 486 digs for an average of 4.7 per set in her senior season as the team’s libero. A 2022 Minneota graduate, Tolk was named to the All-NSIC second team for the third consecutive season this year and finishes her time as a Mustang fourth on the program’s career digs leaderboard.
Arkell earned her third All-Academic selection after finishing the season with 66 blocks and 207 kills on the year. Baune graduated from Red Rock Central in 2022.
Peltier, a junior, picked up her first Academic All-District selection after logging 278 kills on a .294 hitting percentage with 75 blocks for the Mustangs. She received All-Conference second team honors for the second consecutive season.
The SMSU volleyball team finished its season with a 21-7 overall record this year. The Mustangs ended the season sixth in the NSIC standings with a 14-6 conference record after being voted second in the preseason coaches poll. The Mustangs’ season ended with a loss to the St. Cloud State Huskies, who went on to claim their second consecutive NSIC tournament championship.
