MARSHALL — It was a game of runs between the Minneota and Edgerton boys basketball teams at the Marshall Holiday Tournament on Wednesday at Southwest Minnesota State University. The Vikings and Dutchmen traded leads throughout the second half, but it was the Dutchmen that got a pair of timely stops in the waning seconds to defeat Minneota 63-61.
While the Vikings weren’t able to come away with the win, Minneota head coach Chad Johnston said that he felt his team was able to put together a lot of positives in the loss. Namely, he said he felt the group was able to hone its zone defense and zone offense.
Trailing by a pair of points with 30 seconds to play, the Vikings got a pair of opportunities to tie the game or take the lead. Coming out of a timeout, the Vikings got off a 3-point attempt, grabbed an offensive board, and attempted another shot in the paint but neither shot fell, forcing Minneota to intentionally foul.
Edgerton missed the front end of the 1-and-1, giving Minneota the ball back when they called timeout with 5.5 seconds to play. The Vikings got off a corner 3 attempt, but it clanged off the rim. While they got the offensive rebound, the buzzer sounded before they could get the shot off and Edgerton hung on for the win.
In the timeout, the Vikings drew up a play that would leave them with a few offensive options, one of which was to get a quick 2 to tie the game, Johnston said, but didn’t execute.
“We didn’t run anywhere close to what was drawn up, so that part was frustrating,” Johnston said. “When we need to execute and try to get a good look, and we don’t even execute anything, it’s like why even take the timeout?”
Holding a 2-point lead to start the second half, the Vikings got off to a strong start. Tristen Sussner knocked down a 3 and a layup to bring the Vikings’ lead up to 40-34 but the Dutchmen rallied back.
Michael Gunnink cut the deficit to a single possession with an and-1 layup, and Kade Moffitt got a friendly bounce off the rim on a floater to tie up the game at 46-all.
Leo Hennen drained a 3 to give the Vikings the edge once again, but it was short-lived as a free throw and a Colin Scholten gave Edgerton its first lead on a 3, bringing the score to 50-49 with 10 minutes left.
Minneota and Edgerton continued to trade leads back and forth. After Kade Moffit drove along the baseline for a layup, Sussner responded with a tying 3-pointer from the wing and Jace Sorensen added another from the corner to give Minneota a 3-point edge.
Yet, Gunnink knocked down a 3 with a hand in his face at the shot clock buzzer to tie it back up. Ian Myhre then got a second-chance bucket with a free-throw line jumper, but Gunnink tied it right back up again at 57-all with six minutes to play.
Tucker Arp gave the Dutchmen a 59-57 lead with five minutes to play, but Sussner worked his way through the defense for a sweeping layup to tie it before Moffit again answered with a layup of his own for a 61-59 lead with 3:30 left.
Sussner answered the call again with a tying layup after getting right to the cup early in the shot clock with two minutes to play but Gunnink hit a floater in response to make it a 2-point game with 90 seconds to play.
“[Sussner’s] been doing this, just the finishing hasn’t been there. I don’t know if it was a confidence issue, but he made all the right moves today,” Johnston said. “He finished and he was doing those things that we need from him when we’re not gelling at other spots. He needs to come in and do his job, and he’s been doing it, the finishes just haven’t been there. Today, he finished and that was good. He had a great game today, we need that consistency out of him.”
The first half was full of offensive ebbs and flows for the Vikings. They built up a 12-point lead before it waned to 6, and built the lead back up to 15. Yet, the Dutchmen battled back, and Damian Gunnink hit a second-chance layup after Edgerton missed a free throw to cut the deficit to 33-31 at halftime.
Minneota falls to 2-5 on the season with the loss, and next goes on the road to take on undefeated Wabasso (7-0) in a non-conference matchup on Monday at 7 p.m.
