Kesteloot, Mauch lead No. 11 Tigers past West Fargo

WEST FARGO, N.D. — Avery Kesteloot’s three assists and Brooklyn Mauch’s hat trick powered the No. 11 Marshall girls hockey team to a 5-0 win over West Fargo Monday afternoon to kick off the Fargo Winter Classic.

Although a competitive atmosphere between the two, the Tigers continue to sporadically score to eventually build a late lead and halt West Fargo from trying for a comeback.

Marshall slightly outshot West Fargo 9-8 in the opening period, and Nora Holmgren scored the first goal in the 13th minute with assists from Elsie Deutz and Brielle Felton Krog.

Mauch scored the next three goals for Marshall to build a 4-0 lead, with two coming in the second period. She scored in the fifth and eighth minute of the second, and in the second minute of the final period.

Kesteloot assisted on the Tigers’ final three goals as Peyton DeMuth put the dagger on the win with a goal at the 9:40 mark in the third period. DeMuth also had an assist on the night.

Overall, Marshall outshot West Fargo 32-25 as Lily Stelter finished with a perfect save percentage in the goal.

The Tigers (13-4) return to the ice today back at the West Fargo Sports Arena to take on Fargo North/South today at 4 p.m.

Bismarck Legacy (N.D.) 14,

FARGO, N.D. — The Marshall boys hockey team was never able to gain any offensive traction in its match against Fargo Legacy at the West Fargo Winter Classic on Monday. The Sabers outshot the Tigers 41-9 in the game, handing Marshall a 14-0 loss.

Legacy scored nine goals in the first period, outshooting Marshall 21-5 in the frame. They also limited Marshall to two shots on goal in each of the next two frames while firing off 18 of their own in the second and two in the third.

McCoy Guenther made 27 saves in goal for Marshall, but it wasn’t enough as he ended the day with a .659 save percentage.

Kooper Schwan scored two goals in the first two minutes to set the tone for the Sabers while Harrison Johnson finished with a hat trick. Legacy had eight different players score in the game with four of them recording multiple goals.

Marshall falls to 2-8-0 with the loss and returns to action at the Winter Classic today at 10:30 a.m. against Bismarck Century (N.D.).
