Coequyt’s double-double leads Vikings to Holiday Tourney win

Minneota 59, Sleepy Eye 46

MARSHALL — Jaylyn Coequyt’s 15-point, 10-rebound double-double powered the Minneota girls basketball team to a 59-46 win over Sleepy Eye Monday afternoon in the first day of the girls Holiday Tournament in Marshall.

Although committing 10 more turnovers than Sleepy Eye, Minneota was all over the glass on both ends of the court to hold a 53-22 rebounding advantage.

Coequyt shot 54% from the field, going 7 of 13, and Ava Rost followed with another 11 points, three steals and shared a team-high four assists with Eden Meagher.

Sarah Gruenes and Meagher each grabbed another nine rebounds, Libby Sussner had two steals and added another 9 points.

Sleepy Eye had 20 total steals to the Vikings’ 10, while Minneota shot 36% from the field and held Sleepy Eye to 26%.

Minneota (4-2) will return to Southwest Minnesota State University’s R/A Facility to take on Edgerton (4-6) today at 5:30 p.m. on the second and final day of the holiday tournament.

RTR 48, LQPV 36

MARSHALL — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team picked up a 48-36 win over Lac qui Parle Valley Monday afternoon in the first day of the girls Holiday Tournament in Marshall.

Ava Guida was the Knights’ leading scorer in the game, finishing with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Kaysie Serryn and Makayla Hesse each chipped in another 8 points while Paisley Thooft and Brezlyn Buchert finished with 7 each.

RTR evens up its record to .500 with a 4-4 start to the season, and will take on Ortonville (0-8) today back at the tournament in Southwest Minnesota State University’s R/A Facility at 4 p.m.

Cedar Mountain 57, Lakeview 49

COTTONWOOD –The well-dispersed scoring efforts of the Lakeview girls basketball team weren’t enough to capture a win against Cedar Mountain in a non-conference matchup on Monday. The Lakers got everyone involved on the offensive end but fell 57-49, ending their seven-game win streak.

Anah Schmidt led the Lakers’ attack with 16 points on 4 of 11 shooting from the field while making eight of her 13 attempts from the charity stripe. She was also a menace on the defensive end, blocking eight shots and grabbing 11 total rebounds.

Brynn Stensrud and Brook Gunlogson each scored 11 points for Lakeview while Emma Brusven added another 10. Yet, the rest of the Lakers’ roster shot a combined 0 of 10 from the field for 1 point.

Gunlogson snagged three steals in the game while Brynn Stensrud finished with three assists and four rebounds.

Lakeview falls to 7-2 with the loss and will continue its three-game homestand when it hosts Benson (5-2) today at 5:45 p.m.
