Tigers pick up 7-0 season-opening win over Willmar
MARSHALL — Picking up right where it left off after a stellar 2024 season, the Marshall girls hockey team opened up the season with a 7-0 win over Willmar Thursday night at the Red Baron Arena, with six different Tigers scoring a goal.
Brooklyn Mauch led Marshall with two goals, while Lucie Pearson, Eme DeMuth, Peyton DeMuth, Elsie Deutz and Ava Kolander all had goals as well. Abbey Foley had a team-high three assists, while Brielle Felton Krog, Peyton DeMuth, Pearson, Deutz, Kolander and Mauch all had an assist as well.
The Tigers made their offensive power known from the jump, finishing the game with 34 shots on goal and held Willmar to seven shot attempts.
Marshall goalie Lily Stelter is back for Marshall in the net, finishing with a perfect night of seven saves.
Kolander scored the first goal of the season promptly in the first period, with an assist from Foley. Marshall recorded 14 shots on goal in the opening period, to Willmar’s three.
The Tigers put the dagger on the win throughout the second period with another five goals, bolstering a 6-0 lead, and out-shot Willmar 30-5 by the end of the period.
Pearson, Eme DeMuth, Deutz all had a second-period goal, while Mauch had two. Foley, Mauch, Deutz, Felton-Krog, Kolander and Peyton DeMuth helped find the open looks, all recording an assist during the period.
Peyton DeMuth scored in the third period with assists from Foley and Pearson to cap off the victory.
The Tigers are coming off an impressive 23-5-2 record last season, and made a trip to the Class A State Tournament for the first time since 2018, and fourth time in program history after winning the Section 3A championship.
Marshall went on to play in the state consolation bracket championship, eventually falling to Proctor/Hermantown 2-1.
Marshall (1-0) has a quick turnaround, and will return back to the ice today to host Fergus Falls.
Marshall and Fergus Falls last met towards the end of last season at the state tournament in the consolation semifinals, where the Tigers came away with a 3-2 win.
Puck-drop for today’s game is slated for 7 p.m. at the Red Baron Arena.
