MARSHALL — Brooklyn Mauch found lightning in a bottle in the third period of the No. 6 Marshall girls hockey team’s Thanksgiving Tournament championship against the No. 15 Hutchinson Tigers on Saturday. The two teams went scoreless through the first two periods, but Mauch scored a pair of goals in the first 30 seconds of the final stanza to power Marshall to a 3-0 win.

“We just decided that, no matter what, on the bench, on the ice, we need to have energy,” Mauch said of the third-period momentum shift. “That energy will provide into our shifts, and then we’ll have good energy going into our shifts, we’ll get goals and we’ll be able to connect with each other.”

After winning the opening faceoff, Mauch took the puck down the right side of the ice, gliding through the faceoff circle before wristing in the go-ahead goal 13 seconds into the third period. It took just another 15 seconds for her to do the same thing for a second goal, this time assisted by Avery Kesteloot.

Goaltender Lily Stelter posted her third shutout of the year for Marshall, saving each of the 12 shots she faced on the day. The performance raised her save percentage on the season to .936. Head coach Cassi Weiss said that Stelter’s play throughout the two-day tournament was stellar, citing a one save in particular toward the end of Marshall’s 5-1 opening-round win over Shakopee on Friday.

“She had a huge save that not a lot of goalies can make when you’re winning by that much and you’re not seeing that many shots, so she’s done a great job of, no matter what’s going on in the game, she’s locked in,” Weiss said. “She’s ready to make a save at any point. We saw that yesterday and we saw it again today. She had some good quality opportunities that she just pushed to the side and makes it look easy.”

Brielle Felton-Krog scored her first goal of the season four minutes into the third period, giving Marshall an extra bit of insurance. Felton-Krog fell in front of the crease after an Elsie Deutz shot was deflected, and Felton-Krog located the puck before the goaltender and poked it through the five-hole for a 3-0 lead.

Marshall outshot Hutchinson in all three periods, finishing with 38 shots on goal to Hutchinson’s 12. The hometown Tigers maintained a narrow 9-7 edge in shots on goal in the first frame, but gained momentum in the second with an 11-1 advantage.

“I think in the second period, we started to figure out our effort. Unfortunately, the pucks weren’t falling into the back of the net, and that kind of annoys our girls sometimes, so they just took that annoyance and turned it into goals,” Weiss said. “I don’t know what they listened to before the third [period], but it worked.”

Felton-Krog added that the team put on some music during the second intermission to try to get themselves into the right frame of mind and carried the energy that they built up in the locker room onto the ice.

Kaiden Fitterer saved 35 of the 38 shots she faced in goal to post a .921 save percentage in the game for Hutchinson.

Marshall improves to 7-1 with the win and next goes on the road to take on Fairmont (3-1-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
