Lanoue scores 30 in TMB’s season-opening win over RTR

TMB 59, RTR 52
TRACY — Gretchen Lanoue dropped 30 points for the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team in its season opener on Friday, leading the Panthers to a 59-52 non-conference win over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.
Lanoue shot 7 of 13 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and 10 free throws in the win. She also grabbed four rebounds and came away with a steal.
Aiding the Panthers in the victory, Melaina Ankrum chipped in 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting.
For the Knights, Paisley Thooft and Ava Karbo led the way with 15 and 12 points, respectively, while Makayla Hesse added another 9.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton improves to 1-0 with the win and hosts Wabasso (0-1) for its next game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. while RTR falls to 0-1 and hosts Murray County Central (1-0) for its Red Rock Conference opener Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
YME 73, RRC 24
GRANITE FALLS — Bailey Mortenson and Charlotte Paslawski combined for 38 points to power the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team to a 73-24 season-opening win over Red Rock Central Friday night.
Mortenson led the way with a game-high 20 points, going 8 for 12 at the free throw line despite fouling out toward the end of the game. Paslawski followed close behind with 18 points and a pair of 3 pointers.
Paige Wondercheck led the Falcons with 13 points and eight rebounds, and shot 6 for 8 from the charity stripe.
YME made a statement fast and early with a 46-11 halftime lead and never looked back. The Sting were strong from the perimeter with seven made 3-pointers on the night, while holding RRC to just two from the arc, made by Wondercheck and Celia Vogel.
Along with Mortenson and Paslawski, Alana Almich added another 11 points on the night for the Sting behind a game-high trio of 3-pointers, all of which came in the first half.
YME (1-0) will next have its first road game when it travels to BOLD on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
RRC (0-2) will look to get in the win column at its home opener when it hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd 70, Montevideo 50
DAWSON — Claire Stratmoen’s 26 points and Alivia Estling’s 14-point, 11 rebound double-double helped lead the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team to a 70-50 win over Montevideo Friday night in its season opener.
The Blackjacks overall shot 42% from the field and limited Montevideo to just 24%, while also outrebounding the Thunder Hawks 41-32, 28 of which were defensive boards.
Stratmoen’s 26 points were powered by 9 of 19 shooting from the field, going 3 for 7 from the perimeter. She also had five rebounds and a pair of steals. Estling shot 60% from the field, going 6 for 10.
Laura Schreier had a game-high four steals to her seven rebounds and 7 points, while Kylar Hjelmeland also posted 8 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Alyssa Swedzinksi also finished in double-digits with 13 points behind a pair of 3-pointers.
The Blackjacks built a 37-23 lead by halftime, and despite Montevideo making a push defensively forcing 10 turnovers, an all-around team effort on both ends of the court kept Dawson-Boyd in front.
Dawson-Boyd (1-0) will next hit the road to MACCRAY (1-0) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
BLHS 59, Lakeview 45
HECTOR — Despite a tenacious second-half comeback attempt after facing a 33-16 halftime deficit, the Lakeview girls basketball team fell short to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Friday night in the season opener.
Senior center Anah Schmidt led the Lakers with a 19-point, 18-rebound double-double performance, along with three steals.
Senior guard Brynn Stensrud also recorded 17 points on a team-high 43% shooting mark. She also led the way with four steals to her four rebounds.
Lakeview overall shot 27% from the field and faced struggles at the arc going 2 for 20, both of which were made by Stensrud. The Lakers also gave up 20 turnovers, but finished the night with a strong defensive performance of 41 total rebounds and 16 steals.
Reagan Bossuyt brought down another eight boards, while Schmidt, Addyson Jorgenson and Emma Brusven all grabbed three steals each.
The Lakers overall outshot BLHS 29-26 in the second half, but the first-half deficit was ultimately too much to overcome in the end.
Lakeview (0-1) will next hit the road to Edgerton on Dec. 1 with a 7:15 p.m. tipoff.
MCC 55, Wabasso 35
WABASSO – Ava Deacon’s dominant 25 points and 11 steals powered the Murray County Central girls basketball team to a 55-35 win over Wabasso Friday night in the season opener, along with her team-high three assists. The Rabbits struggled offensively, giving up 38 turnovers, to the Rebels’ 20 turnovers.
Wabasso held a sizable advantage on the glass, outrebounding MCC 55-31, yet the Rebels’ 26 steals ultimately became the gamechanger. Wabasso had 10 steals on the night.
Along with Deacon, Kate Blankenship and Calleigh Doeden tallied 10 points apiece. Deacon, Suttyn Schryvers and Reese Gilbertson all shared a team-high five rebounds.
Gilbertson and Blankenship also each followed Deacon with another four steals each.
MCC held a 28-13 halftime edge, and continued to stay in front through its offensive versatility and defensive pressure.
The Rabbits were led by Kenley Guetter’s 11 points and game-high 21 rebounds and three assists, while Cassie Bliss also tallied nine rebounds and a team-high three steals. Guetter also had the lone block of the game. Ava Samyn followed with another seven rebounds for Wabasso.
MCC (1-0) has a quick turnaround and will remain in Wabasso for a weekend tournament, taking on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (0-1) today at 10 a.m.
Wabasso (0-1) will do the same, and take on Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda (0-1) at 12:30 p.m.
WWG 68, GFW 36
WABASSO — Leah Carter put up a game-high 23 points to lead the Westbrook Walnut Grove girls basketball team to a 68-36 season-opening win Friday night in the first day of a Wabasso weekend tournament.
Carter split up her scoring with 13 points in the first half, finishing off the night with another 10.
Kendall Jenniges followed with 12 points behind a pair of 3-pointers, while Hadley Jenniges, Alandra Hansen and Sydney Foster each tallied 6 points.
Hansen also shot a team high 4 for 6 from the free throw line.
While the first half was competitive with the Chargers holding a 37-24 lead, WWG exploded in the second half while holding off GFW.
GFW was led by Keyden Buboltz’s 15 points.
WWG (1-0) will remain in Wabasso for the second day of the weekend tournament, and will take on MACCRAY (1-0) today at 11:15 a.m.
