Appel, Johnson medal at Class A state meet

ST. PAUL — Aiden Appel of Murray County Central/Fulda and Katie Johnson of Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey/Red Rock Central each placed 25th at Saturday’s Class A cross country state championships, leading area individuals with All-State selections in the boys and girls races, respectively.

Appel, a sophomore, set a new personal record with a time of 16:39.9 to earn the final All-State slot. Johnson, meanwhile, ran a 19:34.4 to snag the girls final All-State medal after finishing just 8 seconds shy of her personal record.

The MLAC/RR girls cross country team placed 16th in the meet with a score of 366. Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd also placed 14th out of 16 teams in the girls meet at 304.

Brynn Gloege was the LQPV/DB cross country team’s top finisher in 54th place at 20:12.1, followed by Chloe Gloege at 20:59.8. Laura Schreier also placed 114th at 21:34.0 while Sadie Rosendahl and Tahlia Herson rounded out the Eagle scorers at 22:02.4 for 130th and 22:50.6 for 144th.

MLAC/RRC also had Julia Brinkman and Emily Johnson place 103rd at 21:10.9 and 145th at 22:52.1, and Hannah Savage’s 22:55.6 and Hannah Beyer’s 23:18.7 gave them 146th and 150th place.

Wabasso’s Elsie Leopold placed 27th in the girls meet at 19:36.6and Canby/Minneota’s Mya Pesek placed 92nd at 20:57.0.

Cooper Evers also placed 39th for MLAC/RRC in the boys meet at 16:50.6 and Andrew Morin’s 17:03.4 put him in 59th place to close out the senior season of his prep career.

The MCC/F Rebels also had Matthew Stapek place 67th at 17:15.6 and Alexander Betz place 77th at 17:25.7.
