YME’s Nelson finishes as 3A individual runner-up

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Yellow Medicine East’s Brianna Nelson opened the second day of the Section 3A individual tournament with a win on Tuesday at the Huether Family Match Point, but fell one win shy of a state tournament appearance. The third-seeded Sting sophomore battled her way to the championship match, but fell in two sets to top-seeded Lydia Sweep of Morris-MACA/WCA.

Nelson entered the day in the semifinals after defeating sweeping No. 14 Kinsley Trump of Benson/KMS in the tournament’s opening round and Luverne’s Addyson Mann in the quarterfinals. She was the lone individual among Independent-area schools to advance to the second day of the individual section tournaments.

Taking on second-seeded Ashley Klaassen in the semifinals on Tuesday, Nelson came away with a 6-0, 6-1 sweep. The win was a revenge win for Nelson, who lost 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 to Klaassen during the regular season on Sept. 5.

In the section championship match, Sweep swept Nelson 6-1, 6-0. Sweep, also a sophomore, earned her second win of the season against Nelson after also defeating Nelson 6-4, 6-1 on Aug. 28.

Starting at $3.95/week.
