YME’s Nelson advances to Section 3A individual semifinals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Brianna Nelson will continue to represent the Yellow Medicine East girls tennis team after advancing to the Section 3A individual tournament semifinals with a pair of wins on Monday. The Sting Sophomore swept each of her first two matches to stay alive as the lone area individual heading to the second day of individual section play.

In the opening round, Nelson swept Kinsley Trump of Benson/KMS 6-1, 6-0 and earned a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Luverne’s Addyson Mann in the second round.

Nelson is now set to take on Montevideo’s Ashley Klaassen in the section semifinals today. The pair’s match in the team section tournament was called early after the results of other matches clinched the team match for Montevideo, but Klaassen defeated Nelson 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 when the two met in the regular season on Sept. 5.

Junior Emma Keller also earned an individual tournament win with a 6-3, 7-5 sweep of Luverne’s Hannah Kempema before falling 6-1, 6-0 to top-seeded Lydia Sweep of Morris/MACA/WCA in the quarterfinals.

In the doubles tournament, 13th-seeded Sarana West and Abigail Jimenez pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Morris’ Allison Nohl and Molly Wayne. West and Jimenez also earned a 6-0 win over No. 5 Nora Mages and Kylieann Johnson in the first set of the quarterfinals, but the Montevideo duo won the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to advance.

Kyla Smith and Carley Redepenning also pulled off an upset in the first round, entering as the 11 seed and defeating Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd’s Maya Virji and Alexis Olesen 6-2, 7-5. Smith and Redepenning fell 6-1, 6-1 to Benson/KMS’ Tara Beyer and Emily McGinty in the quarterfinals.

LQPV/DB also had Camryn Olesen and Molley Halvorson split their first two sets against Benson/KMS’ Ella Lysen and Hazel Habben, losing the first 6-1 but winning the second 6-3. Still, Lysen and Habben won the tiebreaker 6-3.

In the individual tournament, LQPV/DB’s Greta Hacker fell 6-0, 6-0 to top-seeded Sweep, while Reese Koosman lost 6-2, 6-3 to Mann.

The second day of play at the 3A individual tournament will begin at 8 a.m. at the Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls, S.D. and is slated to go until 4 p.m.

Section 2AA individual tournament

ST. PETER — Brooklyn Mauch and the duo of Jazilyn Steinberg-Jones and Emry Weller each earned a first-round win in the Section 2AA girls tennis individual tournament on Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College, but the Marshall tennis season came to an end with all Tiger individuals being eliminated before the semifinals.

Mauch, a junior, took on New Ulm’s Lillian Krall in the opening round of the individual tournament. Mauch picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win to advance to the quarterfinals, where she fell 6-3, 6-3 to St. Peter’s Kady Thomas.

In the doubles tournament, Steinberg-Jones and Weller earned a 6-0, 6-2 sweep over Worthington’s Angie Dailey and Isabella Poe. Weller and Steinberg-Jones also won the first set of their quarterfinal match against Hutchinson’s Bhavya Sai Jalla and Brooke Huan by a score of 6-3, but the Hutchinson duo took the next two sets 7-5 and 6-3 to advance.

The quarterfinal match was the final as a Marshall Tiger for Steinberg-Jones and Weller, who were the lone Marshall seniors to compete in the individual section tournament.

Kathryn Coudron was Marshall’s other singles entry, falling 6-0, 6-0 to Mankato East’s Sam Williams in the first round. On the doubles side, Peyton and Eme DeMuth lost 6-1, 6-1 to St. Peter’s Kylie Southworth and Ella Dirks in the opening round.
