Tigers take 2nd at Milan Mader Invite

LAKEVILLE — The top-ranked Marshall volleyball team put together a strong run at Lakeville North’s Milan Mader Invitational over the weekend to finish as tournament runners-up. The Tigers took on five Class 4A schools over the course of the two-day tournament, sweeping four of them and falling only to Class 4A No. 2 Eagan in the final.
The Tigers picked up sweeps over New Prague and Moorhead on Friday to start the tournament, taking down New Prague 25-20, 25-12 in the tournament opener and the Spuds 25-14, 25-7 in their second match.
Marshall’s momentum carried over to Saturday, when it defeated No. 8 Prior Lake 25-13, 25-23 to close out pool play and No. 5 East Ridge 26-24, 25-20 in the semifinals.
The Tigers’ run came to an end in the championship match, falling 25-16, 25-19 to Eagan. The Wildcats jumped from No. 6 into a tie with Lakeville South for No. 2 in the most recent Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association poll after the weekend.
Avery Fahl finished second on the team in kills with 44 and set assists with 52. Her seven service aces were a team-high and her five ace blocks tied Nora Holmgren for a team-high.
Reese Drake finished as the team’s kills leader with 46 and her 30 digs trailed only libero Kezlyn Pinckney’s 51. Fahl also contributed 25 digs while Brooke Gillingham and Kyah Pinckney chipped in 22 and 20, respectively.
Gillingham’s 56 set assists were the high-water mark for the Tigers in the tournament and her five service aces tied her with Halle DeVos behind Fahl and Reese Drake’s six.
Julia Fahl and Nora Holmgren contributed 36 and 20 kills.
Marshall improves to 26-2 after the tournament and hosts Windom (19-6) for the Big South Conference Championship match tonight at 7 p.m. From there, the Tigers will await seeding for the Section 2AAA tournament that kicks off next week.
Minneota, 10th place
LAKEVILLE — The No. 2 Minneota Vikings finished 10th at the Lakeville North Milan Mader Invitational over the weekend. Playing five Class 4A teams, the Vikings came away with one win over the weekend while falling to larger opponents.
Abby Rolbiecki and Brynn Rost led the Minneota back row with seven and five digs, respectively while Sarah Gruenes contributed a pair of blocks in the Vikings’ 25-14, 25-11 loss to Class 4A No. 2 Eagan in the first match of the tournament on Saturday. Eden Meagher also contributed four kills in the match while Sophie Gillund finished with eight digs.
In the second match of pool play. Gruenes led the team with seven kills while Rolbiecki and Rost tallied 12 and eight digs in a 25-12, 25-21 loss to No. 7 Champlin Park. Meagher and Leah Coequyt also logged a pair of blocks each.
The Vikings got back in the win column when they took on Rochester Mayo in the pool play finale. Gruenes recorded 10 kills while Meagher and Jaylyn Coequyt added another five each in the 25-12, 25-11 win.
Libby Sussner served up four aces in the win and her 11 set assists trailed only Gillund’s 11.
Rost led the team with six digs in the win while Madison Minnehan and Rolbiecki finished with five each.
Minneota opened up the bronze bracket with another win behind 10 kills from Meagher, defeating Eden Prairie 25-13, 25-15 to advance to the ninth-place match.
Meagher also tied Leah Coequyt with a pair of blocks in the match.
Autumn Anderson headed the back row with five digs while Sussner served up a trio of aces and logged 12 set assists.
Taking on New Prague in the ninth-place match, the Vikings battled but fell short in three sets, 25-14, 15-25, 16-14.
Minnehan led the defense with eight digs while Gruenes contributed a pair of blocks.
Leah and Jaylyn Coequyt hit for six and four kills, respectively while Gillund and Sussner each logged eight set assists.
Sussner, Anderson and Minnehan each served a pair of aces.
Minneota now sits at 21-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play after the tournament. The Vikings return to action tonight when they host Renville County West (16-7) at 7 p.m.
MCC 3, RRC 1
SLAYTON — The Murray County Central volleyball team got back in the win column with a competitive 3-1 win over Red Rock Central Monday night. Despite the loss, the Falcons’ Natasha Erickson surpassed a milestone with her 1,000th career set assists and finished with a team-high 17.
The Rebels defeated RRC in sets of 25-17, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-21.
For RRC, Ally Linder led the way offensively with seven kills while Kayla Weis and Abby Evans followed with four a piece.
Amelia Ubl finished with a team-high 19 digs, while Keena Kosel and Erickson followed with 16 and 14 digs, respectively.
Shylin Hagert was strong at the front of the net with four blocks. Erickson and Evans also each had one service ace on the night.
MCC stats were not available at the time of publication.
The Rebels (12-9) will next finish the regular season when they hit the road to Pipestone Area (14-6) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
RRC (4-15) will have its regular-season finale back at home on Thursday when it hosts Wabasso (17-11) with a 4:45 p.m. first serve.
WWG 3, SWC 1
EDGERTON — Hadley Jenniges’ 39 set assists, 15 digs and three service aces helped pace the Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Southwest Minnesota Christian Monday night, marking three straight wins. The Chargers won in sets of 25-14, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-9.
Carlie Ross finished with a team-high 16 kills and Sydney Foster followed close behind with another 14. Leah Carter and Myah Maznio each had eight kills on the night.
Foster led the way defensively with 18 kills to Ross’ 17, to pair with Jenniges.
Jenniges, Natasha Wahl, Carter and Mazio all had one block as well.
WWG (19-8-1, 8-1 RRC) remain second in the Red Rock Conference standings, only behind No. 3 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, who finished the regular season undefeated in conference.
The Chargers will next finish up the regular season when they travel to Windom on Monday at 7:15 p.m.
