NEW ULM — Elsie Deutz scored both goals for No. 6 Marshall to lead the Tigers past No. 3 New Ulm 2-1 in a Section 2AA Girls Soccer match Tuesday at New Ulm High School.
The win avenged an earlier 3-0 loss in the regular season and sent Marshall to play No. 2 St. Peter on Thursday.
“Today we just worked together as a team really really well and we just wanted it,” Marshall head coach Matt Versaevel said. “We just wanted it, and that’s pretty much it.”
New Ulm head coach Jonathan Johnson said the team had a tough time executing in this game.
“Our intensity wasn’t there,” he said. “Or maybe our intensity was but our execution wasn’t. We had many shots on goal that just went wide or high or whatever. It just wasn’t meant to be.”
Marlena Kral had the lone goal for New Ulm. Marshall keeper Tristynn Justesen had 11 saves, while New Ulm keeper Ellie Dake had nine saves.
New Ulm had the early advantage on the attack, putting four shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. Justesen was able to save them all, however, and Deutz scored her first goal in the 29th minute on a rebound after a breakdown of the New Ulm defense.
Both teams kept up the attack, but a last-second shot by New Ulm’s Jesalyn Skoglund missed just right of the goal, keeping the score 1-0 headed into half.
Justesen made a circus save to start the second half, blocking a shot and then throwing the ball behind her to prevent her momentum from carrying the ball into the goal two minutes into the period. Two more minutes later, Deutz scored her second goal of the game to make it a 2-0 lead.
Justesen continued to shut down the New Ulm attack with a save on a one-on-one breakaway by New Ulm in the 48th minute. On the other end of the pitch, Dake made a strong save of her own on a free kick a few feet from the goalie box in the 49th minute. After two more shots on goal by New Ulm, the Eagles finally got one past Justesen as Kral put one in the net in the 59th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.
While New Ulm had several more chances for the rest of the game, none were able to find the back of the net as Marshall held on the remaining 21 minutes to pull off the upset.
“We’re definitely excited,” Versaevel said. “At this point in playoffs and sections, it’s just one game at a time. Just prepping and looking for today for what we needed to do to try to win for today. Same thing for next game.”
New Ulm finishes its season with a 10-5-3 record.
“It’s been a good season,” Johnson said. “We played some really good soccer and the girls worked really hard. We’ve got a lot of talent on this team, we’ve got a lot of talent coming up next year too. We’re looking forward to another good season.”
