Therkilsen’s 205 yards lead No. 5 RRC past No. 4 Wabasso in battle of undefeateds

LAMBERTON –In a battle of two undefeated 9-player football teams, it was the No. 5 Red Rock Central Falcons that rose to the top on Friday against the No. 4 Wabasso Rabbits. Carter Therkilsen and Abe Stavnes each recorded two total touchdowns in the game as RRC rallied after halftime to claim a 28-14 win.

The game was tied at 14 points apiece heading into halftime when the Falcons pulled ahead. Stavnes started to get momentum to build when he found Jordan Therkilsen for a 26-yard completion on third-and-12, and Carter Therkilsen broke off a touchdown run on third-and-goal from the 23-yard line to give the Falcons the go-ahead touchdown.

While RRC’s 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, they gave themselves a cushion halfway through the fourth quarter when Carter Therkilsen broke off another 22-yard touchdown run, and Stavnes ran in the conversion for a 28-14 lead.

Therkilsen finished the night with 205 rushing yards on 37 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt, while Stavnes ran for another 101 yards on 16 carries. Carter Therkilsen’s 14 receiving yards were also third on the team behind Jake Erickson’s 26 and Jordan Therkilsen’s four catches for 37 yards.

Erickson caught the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter, hauling in his lone reception for a 26-yard gain while Stavnes ran in the conversion.

Wabasso started the second quarter with the ball and tied the game up shortly thereafter, with Zack Skoblik punching in an 8-yard touchdown to cap off the tying drive. Nolan Leopold ran in the conversion.

Yet, the Falcons responded on the ensuing drive with a one-yard touchdown run from Stavnes. Still, Joe Rohlik broke off a 60-yard run before halftime to knot up the score at 14 points apiece.

Rohlik led the Rabbits with nine carries for 73 yards while Sam Zeug toted the ball another 10 times for 26 yards. Drew Kemp completed 15 of his 21 pass attempts for 103 yards and an interception while Leopold led the team in receiving yards with 42 on five catches.

Stavnes completed five of his eight pass attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown for RRC. He also came away with an interception on defense.

Carter Therkilsen was the Falcons’ leading tackler with eight solo tackles and an assisted tackle. For the Rabbits, Tyson Lightfoot had four solo and nine assisted tackles while Zeug tallied five solo and seven assisted tackles.

Red Rock Central improves to 7-0 on the year with the win and wraps up the regular season on the road against Westbrook-Walnut Grove (2-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Wabasso falls to 6-1 with the loss and aims to end its regular season on a high note when it heads to Heron Lake to take on Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (2-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

TMB 66, KMS 6

KERKHOVEN — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton football team exploded for its highest point total of the season in a dominant 66-6 win behind David Schuh’s 263 rushing yards and four touchdowns Friday night against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sundburg.

Schuh’s rushing yards came on 24 carries, as Griffin Zick also had a big night on the receiving end. He finished with 134 yards on six catches for a pair of touchdowns.

The Panthers had 580 total yards on the night to KMS’s 212.

The night started off competitive with TMB holding an 8-6 lead after the first quarter, before exploding for 36 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Panthers scored in all four quarters.

Aiden Sanow had a good performance leading the Panthers’ offense, finishing with 113 passing yards with five complete passes on seven attempts and one touchdown pass.

Jackson Kruse also had a trio of complete passes on six attempts for 39 yards and one touchdown.

On the defensive end, Kruse, Lawton Verlinde and Trenton Jonson all had a sack on the night. Verlinde also had a team-high six tackles while Sanow followed with four.

Friday also marked TMB’s first road win of the season.

The Panthers (3-4) will next look to even up their record before heading into section tournament play when they wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at BOLD (2-5) at 7 p.m.
