RRC outduels Southwest Christian in 3A South play-in round

EDGERTON — A total of 33 kills from Shylin Hagert, Ally Linder and Abby Evans helped the No. 9 Red Rock Central volleyball team prevail for a 3-2 win over No. 8 Southwest Minnesota Christian in the Section 3A south subdivision play-in round Monday night.
The Falcons took the opening set in extra points, 32-30, before dropping sets two and three 20-25. Yet, RRC came together to win the final two sets of the night 25-17 and 15-11.
The win also snaps a seven-game losing skid for RRC, who entered the postseason 4-15 overall. SWC came into sections with a 5-18 record.
Hagert, Linder and Evans all shared a team-high of 11 kills, as Amelia Ubl held down the defensive end with 27 digs. Linder and Keena Kosel also played heavy roles on the defensive end, finishing the night with 16 and 13 digs, respectively.
Natasha Erickson paced the offense with 29 set assists, while Evans led the Falcons with a trio of service aces. Linder and Ubl also tallied a pair of aces each.
RRC (5-16) will next face top-seeded Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (24-5) in the subdivision first round on Friday with a 7 p.m. first serve. The winner will then advance to the section quarterfinals.
No. 8 YME 3, No. 9 LQPV 0
GRANITE FALLS — After being eliminated in the 3A North play-in each of the last two seasons, the Yellow Medicine East volleyball team took down Lac qui Parle Valley on Monday to return to the 3A North quarterfinals. The Sting dominated the first set of their matchup against the Eagles by a score of 25-12 and held on to complete the sweep, 25-20, 25-17.
Stats for the Sting’s play-in victory were unavailable at the time of publication.
YME improves to 6-18 with the win and goes on the road to take on top-seeded Minneota in the 3A North subsection quarterfinals on Friday at 7 p.m.
Windom 3, WWG 2
WINDOM — While the Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team had three players with at least 19 digs and three players with double-digit kills, it wasn’t enough for the Chargers to take down Windom in their regular-season finale on Monday. The Chargers pushed the Eagles to the limit, but Windom held off WWG for a 27-25, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11 win.
Carlie Ross led the Chargers defensively and offensively in the match, finishing with 18 kills and 32 digs. Leah Carter also made a major impact on both ends of the court with 10 kills, five block assists and an ace block, while Natasha Wahl added another 10 kills.
In the defensive back row, Leah VanDeWiele logged 20 digs while Hadley Jenniges contributed 19. Jenniges also set up 35 set assists.
Sage Bents served up four aces for the Chargers while Sydney Foster added another. Foster also tied Myah Maznio with four block assists.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove finishes the regular season at 19-10 and enters the Section 3A tournament as the No. 2 seed in the South bracket. WWG hosts No. 7 Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in the South subsection quarterfinals on Friday at 7 p.m.
