Baartman reaches 1,000 digs in RTR’s sweep of RRC

No. 1 RTR 3,

No. 9 RRC 0

TYLER — Laken Baartman recorded her 1,000th career dig as the top-seeded Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team cruised to a sweep over No. 9 Red Rock Central Friday night in the Section 3A South subsection quarterfinals. The Knights won in sets of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-15.

Baartman finished the night with a team-high 12 digs to achieve the milestone in her junior year.

Offensively, Sara Thooft led the way with 13 kills while Ava Karbo followed with 11. Brynn Borresen had another eight kills. Brezlyn Buchert and Dru Ellefson both paced the offense, sharing a team-high 18 set assists.

The Knights were also strong from the service line, with Sara Thooft and Baartman both serving a pair of aces while Taylin Thooft, Ellefson and Paisley Thooft all had one.

RTR was able to separate itself through its defense at the front of the net, with Karbo and Thooft both recording three blocks. Paisley Thooft also had one.

For the Falcons, Natasha Erickson led with 12 set assists as Abby Evans and Ally Linder recorded two kills each.

Defensively for RRC, Erickson had a team-best three blocks and Shylin Hagert had one.

The back row was held down by Amelia Ubl, Keena Kosel and Erickson, all finishing the night with eight digs each.

RRC finishes its season 5-17 overall, and graduates seniors Mikayla Weis, Kosel, Abigale Evans and Linder.

RTR (25-5) will next face No. 5 Murray County Central (13-10) in the North’s subsection semifinals on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Worthington High School.

The Rebels defeated No. 4 Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda on Friday in five sets.

No. 4 Canby 3,

No. 5 Wabasso 0

CANBY — Karlie Wollum’s 16 kills, three service aces and 10 digs paced the No. 4 Canby volleyball team to a sweep over No. 5 Wabasso Friday night in the Section 3A North subsection quarterfinals to advance to the division’s semifinals. The Lancers defeated the Rabbits in sets of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-22.

For Canby, Emily Nelson and Grace Hansen both followed Wollum with seven kills apiece, while Brynn Kockelman had another six to pair with her 10 digs and 18 set assists as well. Nelson finished with a team-high 24 set assists.

Canby was strong from the serving line, finishing with a team-total 10 aces. Alexa Vernlund had another trio of aces on the night, while Hansen and Jaryn Houseman each had two.

Defensively, Karli Weber led with four blocks while Nelson had another three. The Lancers had 55 digs collectively, led by Houseman’s 15. Vernlund also had nine digs.

Wabasso also had several strong impacts on the match despite falling short. Paced by Sara Carlson’s 25 set assists, Carly Fenger and Kenley Guetter led the team with nine and eight kills, respectively. Camryn Irlbeck had two serving aces, while Audrey Johnson and Britta Brand each had one as well.

On the defensive end, Johnson had a team-high 16 digs while Guetter followed close behind with 15. Alexa Remiger and Carlson had seven and six digs, respectively.

Fenger was a force at the front of the net with six blocks, while Irlbeck and Guetter had four each as well.

Wabasso finishes its season 18-12 overall, and graduates a strong group of seniors in Fenger, Johnson, Carlson, Irlbeck and Leah Mathiowetz.

Canby (20-10) will next face top-seeded Minneota in the North subsection semifinals on Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University. The winner of the match will move onto the division’s championship match, one win away from reaching the section title game.

Tuesday will be the third time this year the Lancers and Vikings face off, with Minneota winning the first meeting 2-0 at a weekend tournament in September, and Canby taking a five-set win in October.

The match is slated for a 5:30 p.m. first serve.

No. 2 WWG 3, No. 7 TMB 1

WESTBROOK –Natasha Wahl’s 31 digs set the tone defensively for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team in its 3A South subsection quarterfinal match against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday. The Chargers won the first set 25-18 before dropping the second 25-20, but closed out the win with set victories of 25-16 and 26-24 to advance to the subsection semifinals next week.

In addition to Wahl, Leah VanDeWiele and Sydney Foster defended well for the Chargers in the back row with 21 and 17 digs. Wahl also served an ace while Foster served two.

Hadley Jenniges facilitated the WWG attack with 33 assists, resulting in 14 kills for Carlie Ross, 12 for Foster and 10 for Leah Carter. Ross and Carter each logged an ace block.

TMB finishes its season at 10-20 after going on a three-match win streak before Friday. The Panthers graduate Piper Freeburg, Cheyanne Hoffman and Emma Carter.

WWG, meanwhile, improves to 20-10 and is set to take on No. 3 Adrian/Ellsworth (17-8) in the subsection semifinals in Worthington on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

No. 2 CMC 3, No. 7 Lakeview 1

PRINSBURG –After dropping the first set of its 3A North subsection quarterfinal match against Central Minnesota Christian on Friday, the Lakeview volleyball team showed some mental fortitude with how it responded in the second. The Lakers lost their first game 25-3 to the Bluejays, but answered with a 25-20 win in the second. Still, the win was not enough to shift all momentum for the Lakers as CMC won the last two frames 25-18, 25-20 to end the Lakers’ season.

The loss still showed progress for the Lakers, who were defeated 25-29, 25-20, 25-16 earlier in the season by CMC.

Taylor Hinz led the Laker attack on the day with 11 kills, as well as six digs and an ace. Kiara Hinz also had a well-rounded match with six kills, three digs, two blocks and a service ace while Allison Isaacs added another block.

Khya Garawecki and Nicole Schwartz tallied 15 and seven set assists, respectively, while Adison Hinz logged a team-leading 11 digs.

Lakeview finishes its season at 14-13, an improvement from last season’s 10-11 record. The Lakers graduate a trio of seniors, including Teegan Fiene, Kiara Hinz and Aubrey Nething.

No. 5 MCC 3, No. 4 HLOF 2

OKABENA — The No. 5 Murray County Central volleyball team prevailed for a five-set upset win over No. 4 Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda Friday night in the Section 3A South subsection quarterfinals, continuing its season onto the division’s semifinals.

Suttyn Schryvers’ 20 kills, Erynn Rohrer’s four service aces and 32 set assists along with Kat Miller’s seven blocks helped the Rebels separate themselves when it mattered most, winning in sets of 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-7.

Kate Blankenship also had a pair of aces on the night to her six kills, while Reese Gilbertson followed Schryvers with another 11 kills.

Avery Thovson finished with another 17 set assists to help Rohrer, as MCC also had a strong defensive performance in the back row.

MCC moves to 13-10 overall, and will next face top-seeded Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in the 3A South semifinals on Tuesday at Worthington High School.

RTR defeated No. 9 Red Rock Central Friday night in sets of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-15.

The Rebels and Knights met once over the regular season on Sept. 30 in Tyler, with RTR coming away with a 3-0 win in sets of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-16.

Tuesday’s match is set to begin with a 5:30 p.m. first serve.
