SMSU falls 3-1 to BSU in conference opener

BEMIDJI — The Southwest Minnesota State womens soccer team went on the road to take on Bemidji State in its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match of the season on Saturday. The Mustangs got on the board in the first 10 minutes of play, but the offense fell flat from there as they fell 3-1 to the Beavers.

Kennady Krebs put together a strong night in goal despite the loss, finishing the match with a career-high nine saves. Her previous high-water mark was five in a 3-0 loss at Fort Hays State on Sunday.

Kenzie Harer scored a goal in the fifth minute of the match on an assist from Katrina Barthelt to give Bemidji State an early edge, but the Mustangs didn’t remain down for long. Leah Dehne received a feed from Lenee Chavez just five minutes later and knocked it into the back of the net for the equalizer and her first goal as a Mustang.

That would be the last time the Mustangs had the game tied, however. Barthelt accrued her second assist of the match in the 22nd minute, setting up Sylve Waters for a goal, and the Beavers led for the remainder of the match.

Bemidji out-shot the Mustangs 11-4 in the first half, including an 8-2 edge in shots on target. That margin only grew after the break, as the Beavers outshot the Mustangs 23-9 overall and 12-5 in terms of shots on target.

Emma Huelsnitz gave the Beavers one more insurance goal in the 67th minute, scoring off a pass from Ella Wade to bring the score to 3-1.

SMSU falls to 1-3-0 on the season with the loss (0-1-0 NSIC) and will look to bounce back on Sunday when it heads to Malosky Stadium for a road matchup against Minnesota Duluth (2-1-1, 1-0-0 NSIC) at noon.

Starting at $3.95/week.
