Murphy’s individual win leads Tigers to 2nd in Willmar

WILLMAR –Jasmine Murphy finished as the top individual in the field of 42 runners at the Willmar Glacial Lakes Invite at Eagle Creek Golf Course on Saturday. The Marshall eighth grader led the Tiger girls cross country team to a runner-up finish in the six-team event.
Murphy put together a finishing time of 19:20.3 in Saturday’s race, leaving her just 13 seconds shy of her personal record that she set at the Augustana Twilight Meet. Her time also put her 15.4 seconds ahead of the individual runner-up, Willmar’s Gabby Martinez.
Claire Kruse and Katelyn Leibfried each also placed in the top 10 of the event, Kruse placing seventh at 20:05.1 and Leibfried placing eighth at 20:15.1.
Marshall put together a team score of 49, leaving them 14 points behind St. Cloud Cathedral and 5 points ahead of third-place Willmar. Canby/Minneota also placed fourth at 112, followed by Sartell at 115 and Cretin-Derham Hall at 138.
Willmar also had Allison Mages on the podium in third place at 19:40.8, but St. Cloud took over from there. Cathedral had Katelyn Waldoch, Enya Scanlon and Rosalie Schad come in consecutively at fourth, fifth and sixth, and its depth continued to show with Lilly Jamison and Kaylee Prom rounding out the team’s scorers in ninth and 11th.
Kaitlyn Soupir placed 15th for Marshall at 21:15.8 while Brooklyn Purrington was the team’s final scorer at 21:40.5.
Mya Pesek and Adri Christianson were the leading finishers for Canby/Minneota. Pesek placed 13th at 21:05.6 and Christianson placed 16th at 21:27.5.
Taylor Ourada also placed in the top half of the field, finishing 21st at 21:47.8, while Jonna Briggs and Sophie Becker rounded out the Lancer scorers in 26th at 22:45.8 and 36th at 23:45.8.
Marshall next races at Arrowwood Golf Course in Alexandria on Saturday at 10 a.m, while Canby/Minneota returns to action in Luverne on Thursday at 4 p.m.
