Marshall VB improves to 13-0 vs. Mankato West

MANKATO — Halle DeVos accounted for three of the No. 1 Marshall volleyball team’s seven service aces on Monday night, also going 13 of 13 from the service line, as the Tigers picked up a 3-0 sweep of Mankato West. The Tigers dominated the first two sets by scores of 25-8 and 25-9, and held off a furious Scarlett rally in the third to claim a 25-18 clincher.

The Tigers’ 13-0 start is their best since at least 2010, as far back as Minnesota Volleyball Hub records go back.

Brooke Gillingham tallied 23 set assists for the Tigers while Avery Fahl chipped in another 14. On the finishing end of those points, Reese Drake and Julia Fahl recorded 14 and 11 kills, respectively, and Avery Fahl added another eight.

Both of the Fahls made a major defensive impact. Avery’s three blocks were a match-high and her four digs trailed only Kyah and Kezlyn Pinckney’s five. Julia Fahl contributed another ace block.

Marshall improves to 13-0 on the year with the win and will look to pick up its 14th consecutive win when it goes on the road to take on New Ulm (5-9) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. The Tigers will then compete at the Apple Valley Tournament on Friday and Saturday, with Friday’s matches scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m.

Eight of the 15 teams in the tournament are ranked top 10 or receiving votes in the latest Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association Class 4A poll, with Marshall also entering as the No. 1 team in Class 3A with 13 of the 16 first-place votes.

No. 3 RTR 3, WWG 0

TYLER — The third-ranked Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team handed Westbrook-Walnut Grove just its second loss of the season, snapping a six-game winning streak, Monday night at home with a 3-0 win.

The Knights, who have now won five of its last six matches, picked up their third straight sweep in sets of 25-11, 25-10 and prevailed for a 25-18 set-three victory.

For WWG, Leah VanDeWiele, Carlie Ross and Hadley Jenniges all anchored the defense and combined for 35 digs. VanDeWiele led with a team-high 13, while Ross and Jenniges tallied 12 and 10, respectively.

Jenniges also paced the offense with 18 set assists.

At the net, Ross finished with a team-high seven kills. Leah Carter finished with another six, while Jenniges had five on the night.

Jenniges and Carter both had two assisted blocks.

On the Knights’ side, Dru Ellefson recorded a game-high 28 set assists while Brezlyn Buchert finished with 14 to help RTR to victory.

Laken Baartman continues to show up big defensively with 22 digs on the night, and Makenna Hess followed with 12.

On the offensive end, Ava Karbo and Brynn Borresen combined for 23 kills, behind Karbo’s game-high 13. Paisley and Sara Thooft both had nine kills on the night.

Buchert, Karbo, Ellefson and Paisley all had one block as well.

RTR continues to climb the Class A coaches poll, and was tabbed No. 3 in the most-recent polls released on Monday.

The Knights (9-4) will remain at home looking for their fourth-consecutive win when they host Hills-Beaver Creek (5-4) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

WWG (8-2) will next look to bounce back into the win column when it returns home to host Edgerton on Thursday with a 7:15 p.m. first serve.

WABASSO TOURNAMENT

Wabasso, 1st place

WABASSO — A week after falling out of the top 10 of the coaches poll, the Wabasso volleyball team returned to form over the weekend with a first-place finish at its home tournament on Saturday. The Rabbits went 2-1 in pool play, their lone loss coming to No. 7 MACCRAY, but they bounced back in the gold bracket with a win over Central Minnesota Christian to advance to the championship round, where they rallied back with a three-set win over MACCRAY to claim the title.

Camryn Irlbeck was a defensive force for the Rabbits, recording three ace blocks and 13 block assists over the course of the tournament. Her 30 kills were second only to Carly Fenger’s 35, and her three ace serves tied Leah Mathiowetz and Kenley Guetter for second on the team to Audrey Johnson’s five.

Johnson led the defensive back row with 40 digs in the tournament, followed by 27 from Guetter and 17 from Mathiowetz.

Sara Carlson facilitated the Wabasso attack with 106 set assists in the tournament. She also logged four solo and five assisted blocks, while Guetter added another eight block assists with one solo block.

Wabasso swept its first two matches of the tournament, defeating Redwood Valley 25-11, 25-13 and Southwest Minnesota Christian 25-11, 25-9. Yet, MACCRAY interrupted Wabasso’s bid for a perfect tournament run by defeating the Rabbits 25-23, 25-15 in the pool play finale.

The Rabbits opened bracket play with a 25-15 win over Central Minnesota Christian, but the Bluejays tied the match with a 25-12 win in game 2. Still, Wabasso earned the 15-9 tiebreaker set win to advance to the final.

Wabasso opened the championship round looking for revenge and defeated the Wolverines 25-22 in the first game. MACCRAY responded with a dominant 25-20 win in the second game, but again Wabasso prevailed in an extended deciding third set by a score of 16-14.

Now 7-4 overall on the season, the Rabbits will look to continue building momentum when they go on the road to take on Sleepy Eye tonight at 7 p.m.

JCC TOURNAMENT

RRC, 0-4

JACKSON — The Red Rock Central volleyball team struggled at the Jackson County Central tournament on Saturday. The Falcons were able to claim a set in two of their four matches, but ultimately dropped each of the four.

Martin County West handed the Falcons a 25-18, 25-11 loss to start the tournament and Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda followed up with a 25-17, 25-19 win over RRC.

Estherville-Lincoln Central (Iowa) defeated RRC 25-11 in the first game of the match, but RRC responded with a 25-12 win in the second. Despite putting up a strong fight in the tiebreaker, ELC handed RRC a 15-11 loss.

In the final match of the tournament for RRC, Luverne claimed the first game 25-20 before RRC responded with a 28-26 win. Still, the Cardinals won set 3 15-12.

Amelia Ubl and Natasha Erickson led RRC defensively with 26 and 25 digs, as well as 43 set assists and an ace for Erickson.

In the front row, Shylin Hagert and Abby Evans contributed 10 and seven blocks. They were also the team’s leading hitters, with 12 kills and three aces for Evans and nine kills for Hagert.

Sophie Paplow went 29 of 30 from the service line with four aces over the tournament.
