MARSHALL — Kathryn Coudron’s come-from-behind win in singles No. 2 wasn’t enough to propel to the Marshall girls tennis team to victory on Tuesday afternoon as the Tigers fell 4-3 to New Ulm in a Big South Conference matchup.

Marshall and New Ulm’s matchup began nearly three weeks ago, but weather forced the match to be postponed and resumed on Tuesday.

“It was a unique circumstance because it’s only the second time in my coaching career that we’ve had this happen,” Marshall head coach Alex Cleppe said of a match being divided up over multiple days. “A lot of things can take place in between those times. I’m just hopeful that our girls can take how this match went today and hopefully we get another chance to play New Ulm in the playoffs.”

Coudron lost her first set against Natalie Fischer 6-4 but bounced back from there. She won the second 6-2, and dominated the tiebreaker to a tune of 6-1 to close out the win.

Marshall also earned a singles point from Brooklyn Mauch in the top singles match. Mauch won each of her two sets against Carmen Schotzko by a score of 6-2.

Peyton and Eme DeMuth gave Marshall its final point of the day in doubles No. 3. The duo picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Brielle Evans and Lilly Rieger.

New Ulm took the other pair of doubles matches. Kaylee Evans and Everly Batt swept Jazilyn Steinberg-Jones and Emry Jans 6-3, 6-1 in doubles No. 1, while Lydia Osborne and Maggie Joyce dropped their first set to Julia Pafko and Ilianna Bautista 4-3, but Marshall defaulted on the rest of the match.

Lilly Kral and Avah Kruse each picked up singles wins for the Eagles, with Kral defeating Marshall’s Kyra Bailey 6-2, 6-3 and Kruse defeating Cora Medina 6-2, 6-4.

Marshall falls to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the Big South Conference with the loss, and will look to rebound on Thursday when it hosts Luverne at 4:30 p.m.

“Trying to clean up some of our self-inflicted errors, I think, is the big thing,” Cleppe said of the team’s focus as it continues down the final stretch of the season. “I feel like if we can limit the self-inflicted errors, then we’ll be in a much better position come postseason play.”

Starting at $3.95/week.
