Marshall picks up road sweep of NU

NEW ULM — New Ulm couldn’t seem to stop Marshall’s aggressive offense with the Tigers’ top four hitters racking up 41 total kills in Thursday’s Big South Conference volleyball match, downing the Eagles 25-11, 25-15, 25-11.

Marshall was dominant at the net with Reese Drake having 13 kills and one ace serving. Avery Fahl followed closely with 12 kills. Nora Holmgren had nine kills and Julia Fahl had seven kills. Brooke Gillingham led the team in set assists with 26 and Avery Fahl was close behind with 24. Kyah Pinckney had 14 digs, followed by Drake with six and Makia Radtke with five.

For the Eagles, Brooklyn Lewis and Calli Koop led the team in kills with four. The next best was Lauren Schmiesing with two. Lily Poehler had seven set assists with Izzy Longtin following with three. Poehler led the team in digs with 15, followed by Koop with eight and Schmiesing with five. Blocking was led by Keira Sullivan with two and Karly Meier and Schmiesing with one.

Marshall started the game off scoring 8 of the first 10 points, led by Avery Fahl and Nora Holmgren who each had 2 kills. Marshall went on a 5-point run led by Holmgren with three kills bringing the score to 16-4. The Eagles fired back with a 3-point run led by Lewis with two well-placed bumps to bring the score to 21-9. That wasn’t enough for the Eagles, however, with four Marshall kills to bring the first set score to 25-11.

New Ulm started the second set better with Schmiesing having a block to put them up 3-1. Three Eagle errors gave the Tigers back the lead 4-3. The Eagles went on a 3-point run with an ace from Lauren Hintz to bring them within 1 point with a score of 12-11. Marshall widened the lead again with an Avery Fahl kill to bring the score to 18-12. The Eagles finished the second set with four consecutive errors to end with a score of 25-15.

The third set wasn’t much different with an early 4-point run ended by a serving error bringing the score to 9-4. Marshall controlled the third set with a 6-2 run, bringing the score to 15-6.

The Eagles scored a few more points with a kill from Koop and Marshall errors bringing them to 11 points, but the Tigers kept their offensive aggression going with a block and an ace from Julia Fahl and three kills to end the third set 25-11.

Marshall (14-0, 4-0) plays in a tournament in Apple Valley while New Ulm (5-11, 0-4) plays in a tournament in Austin on Saturday.
