Karbo, Borresen combine for 22 kills in RTR’s sweep over Edgerton

No. 4 RTR 3, Edgerton 0
TYLER — Ava Karbo and Brynn Borresen’s 22 kills led the No. 4 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team to its fifth-straight win Tuesday night over Edgerton in three sets of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-18.
Karbo led the way with a team-high 12 kills, while Borrsen followed with 10. Sara Thooft finished with another nine. Borresen also had two blocks.
Laken Baartman held down the back row with 13 digs, while Thooft finished with eight more. Both Brezlyn Buchert and Dru Ellefson recorded six digs as well.
The setting duo of Ellefson and Buchert continue to set up the Knights’ offense, who had 22 and 17 set assists, respectively.
RTR had a good showing at the service line as well, with Baartman and Makenna Hess grabbing a pair of aces while Taylin Thooft also had one.
RTR was tabbed at No. 4 in this week’s coaches poll, and picked up four wins at the Class A Showcase Tournament over the weekend, three of which came over other class-ranked opponents.
The Knights (15-5) will look to keep the good momentum going into Thursday when they travel to Southwest Minnesota Christian (5-11) with a 7 p.m. first serve.
No. 6 Canby 3, KMS 0
CANBY — Emily Nelson’s seven service aces, 18 assists and eight kills led the No. 6 Canby volleyball team to a sweep over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Tuesday night, snapping a three-game skid. The Lancers defeated the Fighting Saints in sets of 25-8, 25-18 and 25-10.
Canby was aggressive from all areas of the court, including a team total of 14 aces. Behind Nelson, Grace Hansen also had four while Brynn Kockelman, Amya Verhelst and Alexa Vernlund each had one.
Along with the offensive end, Hansen also had eight kills on the night, while Karlie Wollum finished with a team-high of nine. Kockelman and Karli Weber each had six.
Kockelman and Weber worked to protect the front of the net with three blocks each, while Hansen also had two.
Defensively, senior libero Jaryn Houseman led with 14 digs. Vernlund and Kockelman followed with eight and seven digs, respectively, while Wollum had another six.
Kockelman paced the Lancers with 21 set assists, to go along with Nelson.
Canby dropped three games over the weekend at the Class A Showcase, all to other top-5 ranked opponents in the class. But, the Lancers’ all-around team effort got them back in the win column while controlling the game through all three sets.
Canby (10-8) will look to pick up another win when it hits the road to Lac qui Parle Valley (4-9) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
YME 3, Dawson-Boyd 0
GRANITE FALLS — The Yellow Medicine East volleyball team picked up its third win in five matches with a sweep over Dawson-Boyd Tuesday night in sets of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20.
Lexi Stengel and Alana Almich led the way with 20 set assists and nine kills to power the Sting to victory.
Bayli Sneller finished with a pair of service aces and six digs, while Bailey Mortenson also had five kills and five digs.
Continuing the team’s all-around effort, Abbey Bones tallied four kills with two blocks, while Ella Chervney also had six digs. Hannah Bjorndal also had two blocks.
The Blackjacks stayed within reach throughout the entire match, and were led by Stella Roth’s seven kills and Hattie Kemen’s nine digs.
Kadyn Perkins followed with five kills, while Kylar Hjelmeland and Rylan Plessner finished with four and three kills, respectively.
Roth also had four service aces on the night, as did Perkins with three.
Claire Stratmoen and Emma Stotesbery partnered to set up Dawson-Boyd’s offense, with seven and eight assists.
Plessner and Roth both finished with two blocks each.
YME moves to 4-8 on the season, and will look to stay in the win column when it goes to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (4-7) on Thursday.
Dawson-Boyd (1-13) will look to end a five-game skid when it returns home to host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (6-12) on Thursday.
Both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
Cedar Mountain 3, Wabasso 2
CEDAR MOUNTAIN — Although taking a 2-0 lead to open the match, the Wabasso volleyball team fell short in a five-set thriller to Cedar Mountain Tuesday night on the road. Kenley Guetter and Audrey Johnson combined for 33 digs, while Guetter had five service aces.
The Rabbits took the first two sets in wins of 25-18 and 25-20, but the Cougars found the answers for a reverse sweep, taking the next three sets 25-16, 27-25 and 15-7.
In a definitely competitive match, Guetter led the team with 18 digs while Johnson followed with 15. Britta Brand had 12 on the night, and Alexa Remiger had another 11.
On the offensive end, Guetter and Camryn Irlbeck shared a team-high of 13 kills. Carly Fenger had another 11.
Sara Carlson continues to pace Wabasso’s offense, finishing the night with a dominating 45 set assists.
Fenger led with three assisted blocks, while Leah Mathiowetz, Irlbeck and Carlson all followed with two each.
Wabasso moves to 10-9 on the season, and will next look to get back in the win column when it travels to Lester Prairie (8-7) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
CMC 3, TMB 0
TRACY — Although a competitive match that stayed within reach of both sides, the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team fell short to Central Minnesota Christian Tuesday night in three sets of 21-25, 16-25 and 24-26.
Allie Adams and Piper Freeburg had strong performances on the defensive end with 15 and 14 digs, respectively, while Braelynn Kirk also tallied nine. Melaina Ankrum and Alli Dolan followed with eight and six digs.
Ankrum also finished with a team-high 17 set assists, along with Dolan’s nine.
The Panthers also had several contributors on the offensive end, powered by Kirk’s eight kills. Ankrum finished with seven, while Elsie Knott had four. Adams and Bella Martinez had three kills each as well.
TMB (6-12) will look to get back in the win column when it travels to Dawson-Boyd (1-13) on Thursday with a 7 p.m. first serve.
A/E 3, RRC 1
LAMBERTON — Natasha Erickson’s 19 digs and Abby Evans’ eight kills weren’t quite enough as the Red Rock Central volleyball team fell short 3-1 to Adrian/Ellsworth Tuesday night in sets on 18-25, 9-25, 25-15 and 14-25.
Along with Erickson, Keena Kosel and Sophie Paplow followed with 11 digs on the night each.
Ally Linder also had a strong night offensively with six kills, and Erickson had a team-high 14 set assists.
On the defensive end, Shylin Hagert led with a team-high trio of blocks, while Abby Evans and Ally Linder also had two each.
Paplow was strong from the service line with three aces, while Abby Evans had another two.
RRC is coming off a three-game win streak, two of which were won in five sets.
The Falcons (4-10) will next travel to Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda (7-9) on Thursday with a 7 p.m. first serve.
WWG 3, MCC 0
WESTBROOK — Hadley Jenniges’ 26 assists and Carlie Ross’ 16 digs helped the Westbrook-Walnut Grove team to a competitive 3-0 sweep over Murray County Central Tuesday night in sets of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23.
Along with Ross, Leah VanDeWiele and Sydney Foster each followed with 12 digs on the night.
With both teams staying within reach of one another the entire night, Leah Carter finished with a team-high 12 kills for the Chargers. Ross had seven, while Jenniges and Foster followed with another six kills each.
Myah Maznio and Carter had three and two blocks, respectively, while Ross and Jenniges both had a pair of service aces to add to the offense.

MCC (7-5) is coming off a three-game win streak, and will next look to get back in the win column when it travels to Edgerton (4-13) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
WWG (12-5) will also go on the road to Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (2-10), also at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview volleyball team kept its stride going, picking up its sixth win in eight matches Tuesday night in a sweep over Lac qui Parle Valley. The Lakers defeated the Eagles in sets of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-22.

Lakeview moves above .500 to a 7-6 overall record, and will next travel to take on No. 5 MACCRAY (14-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
