Jacobs leads SMSU golf at Central Region Preview

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. — Isabella Jacobs put together a strong finish at the Southwest Minnesota State University womens golf team’s first tournament of the year, the Central region Preview at Adams Point Golf Club, on Wednesday. The senior Mustang shot a career-low 76 on the second day of the tournament as SMSU placed last out of 18 teams with a two-round team total of 88-over 664.

Jacobs’ 4-over brought her to a two-day score of 10-over 154 to finish in a tie for 27th, with two of her three birdies coming on the second day of competition. Her play helped SMSU to a team score of 330 on the second day of play, a four-stroke improvement from Tuesday’s outing.

True freshman Carly Hamman had the Mustangs’ second-lowest performance of the tournament, tying for 63rd at 18-over 162. She shot a 7-over 79 in her SMSU debut on Tuesday, including a birdie on her final hole, and shot an 11-over 83 on Wednesday.

SMSU’s team score of 88-over put them 10 strokes back of 17th-place Northeastern State and 17 strokes back of 16th-place Southern Nazarene. Central Missouri won the tournament at 10-over, followed by Nebraska Kearney at 24-over and Missouri Western at 26-over.

Henderson State’s Lily Henderson was the individual champion at 4-under while Central Missouri’s Mia Rallo also finished in the red at 3-under. Northwest Missouri’s Lauren Briggs and Nebraska Kearney’s Pella Broms rounded out the podium in a tie for third at even-par.

Berkeley Steffen was SMSU’s No. 3 scorer, placing 84th with a two-round score of 28-over after shooting a 14-over each day.

Meghan Pundsack bounced back with a 19-over first round by shooting a 13-over on Wednesday to finish the tournament in 87th out of 90 golfers at 32-over. Allie Nedved also competed for SMSU with a 40-over to place 90th.

SMSU gets back to the links next week, when it competes at the Bemidji State Tracy Lane Memorial Tournament at Bemidji Town and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
