MARSHALL — After braving an hour-long rain delay, Elsie Deutz’s hat trick performance helped give the Marshall girls soccer team its first win of the season with a 6-0 victory over Worthington Tuesday night in a Big South Conference matchup.
Deutz scored her goals promptly in the 7th and 24th minutes of the first half, and continued attacking throughout her minutes played with her third goal coming in the opening moments of the second half.
“I think everyone passing and talking helped a lot with the goals,” Deutz said. “[We] just kept crashing the net, and kept going through the evening.”
As a whole, Marshall’s offense never let up as the Tigers spent a majority of the game in the attacking third. A handful of players had good looks or shots on goal throughout the night.
Freshman Maddie Hoefer had the Tigers’ second goal of the night, while freshman Ayla Quist and junior Kathryn Gordon scored the final two goals in the second half.
“It [the win] feels good. It’s definitely going to get us on a good start,” Gordon said. “We never gave up … We played like it was 0-0 the whole time.”
Eighth grader Tristynn Justesen was in the net for Marshall, and ended the night with a save in the final seconds as Worthington attempted to get a shot off, securing the Tigers’ complete shutout win.
Both Marshall and Worthington entered Tuesday night looking to get its first wins in the early beginnings of the season.
The Trojans have opened the year with three shutout losses prior to meeting Marshall, and the Tigers have fallen to Waseca 3-2 and St. Peter 5-3 in their two most recent games.
“It’s the first win of the season for us. There was a point where we did kind of let [our lead] get to our heads,” junior Abby Wing said. “But, then we did pull it back together again.”
Marshall’s offensive effort was evident from the jump, with Ariana Arevalo and Deutz both having their first shots on goal two minutes in.
Getting the scoring started, Deutz took the ball up herself up the left side of the field up into the attacking third, kicking it over the goalkeeper’s head to send the ball into the back right of the net.
Again just moments later, Arevalo and Quist each had another shot attempt before Hoefer got the ball into the right corner of the field in Worthington’s scoring zone. She sent over a kick toward the goal that grazed the Worthington’s goalie’s fingertips and found the back of the net.
Deutz had several shots on goal, as did Arevalo who also continued to crash toward the net.
“I think we just kept going. We all talked, and we just never stopped going after the ball,” Deutz said. “We were [giving] 100% the whole time.”
In the 24th minute of the first half, Deutz rebounded a kick off Worthington’s goalie after making a save, and again sent the ball immediately back into the net for her second goal of the night, and gave the Tigers an early 3-0 edge.
Marshall kept its foot on the gas the rest of the way, never allowing Worthington find the back of the net.
Deutz essentially put the dagger on Marshall’s victory just 32 seconds into the second half with her third goal of the night, and Quist followed it up with her goal five minutes later, earning a plethora of cheers from their teammates and fans as Marshall went up 5-0.
The Tigers weren’t done firing as the game was coming to a close and another downfall of rain began to start up, as Gordon sent the ball into the net with 1:30 left to give Marshall its sixth and final goal.
“I think the motivation and just having that in us will just fuel us for the next couple games,” Gordon said. “We play Fairmont on Thursday, and I think we’re going to come out really strong on their home field.”
Head coach Matt Versaevel made substitutions throughout the final half, as Marshall continued to cruise the rest of the way while protecting its net until the final whistle.
Marshall (1-4) will next look to keep the momentum going when it travels to take on Fairmont on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Jeffery Kot Fields.
