Ankrum, Kirk lead Panthers in five-set victory

ORTONVILLE — Melaina Ankrum’s 17 kills and 22 set assists paved the path to victory for the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team in its Camden Conference match against Ortonville on Thursday. The Panthers dropped the match’s first set but continued to battle throughout, eventually picking up a five-set win over the Trojans.
Ortonville claimed a 25-18 win in the first set but the Panthers responded with a 25-16 in the second. The match intensified from there with back-to-back extended sets, resulting in a 29-27 game 3 win for the Panthers and a 26-24 game 4 win for the Trojans. Still, TMB came out on top in the tiebreaker with a 15-11 win.
In addition to Ankrum in the front row, Baelynn Kirk and Allie Adams were each significant contributors with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Alli Dolan also tied Ankrum with a team-high 22 set assists.
Piper Freeburg put on an electric performance at libero for TMB, tallying 35 digs to keep the Panthers in the match. She was aided in the back row by 17 digs from Freeburg, 14 from Ankrum and 12 from Cheyenne Hoffman.
Gretchen Lanoue sent back a pair of ace blocks and a pair of block assists in the match, while Ankrum logged one solo block and three block assists.
TMB improves to 4-8 on the season and next heads off to the Sibley East Tournament on Saturday. The Panthers are slated to play Dassel-Cokato (9-4) at 10 a.m., Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (0-7) at 11:30 a.m. and Norwood-Young America (4-7) at 12:15 p.m.
No. 1 Minneota 3, LQPV 0
MINNEOTA — Jaylyn Coequyt and Leah Coequyt combined for 25 kills, and Libby Sussner had a big night with 32 set assists as the top-ranked Minneota volleyball team picked up its fifth-straight sweep over Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday in sets of 25-14, 25-6 and 25-8.
Jaylyn Coequyt finished with a team-high 14 kills, while Leah Coequyt followed with 11. Sarah Gruenes and Eden Meagher each tallied another six, and Natalie Ratajczak finished with three.
The Vikings again had a strong defensive performance, with senior libero Abby Rolbiecki leading the team with eight digs. Autum Anderson also had seven, while Sussner followed with six digs.
Minneota was confident from the service line, finishing with a collective eight aces on the night.
Meagher and Madison Minnehand each had a pair of aces, while Sussner, Anderson, Ratajczak and Ava Rost all had one.
Minneota was tabbed No. 1 in this week’s Class A coaches poll, where it has been since preseason.
The Vikings (10-2) will next play in the Class A Showcase Tournament this weekend at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse in Burnsville. Minneota will begin by taking on Wabasso (8-5) at 6:30 p.m., and will face Spring Grove (5-3) directly after.
The Vikings will continue with another two games on Saturday.
No. 6 Canby 3, Dawson-Boyd 0
DAWSON — Emily Nelson’s 24 set assists paced the No. 6 Canby volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Dawson-Boyd Thursday night in dominant sets of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-14.
Karlie Wollum led the Lancers with 12 kills on a .611 hitting percentage, while Brynn Kockelman and Grace Hansen each had seven kills. Hansen also had a team-high four blocks, while Karli Weber followed with three.
Rachel Jelen had a powerful night from the service line, serving a game-high four aces. Nelson had another two.
Senior libero Jaryn Houseman controlled the defense with 11 digs, while Wollum and Nelson followed with seven and six more, respectively.
For the Blackjacks, Kadyn Perkins led the way with seven kills and Kylar Hjemeland had another two.
Claire Stratmoen finished with a team-high nine digs and pair of serving aces, while Hattie Kemen tallied eight digs.
Stratmoen and Emma Stotesbery both finished with four assists each.
Canby (7-5) will next play in the Class A Showcase Tournament this weekend at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse in Burnsville. They will take on Ely (9-2) today at 6:30 p.m., and face Kenyon-Wanamingo (10-2) after. The Lancers will face No. 3 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (10-4) on Saturday.
Dawson-Boyd (1-12) will look to get back in the win column when it travels to Yellow Medicine East (3-8) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
KMS 3, Lakeview 2
KERKHOVEN — The Lakeview volleyball team put up a strong fight and was on the verge of a reverse sweep, but fell just short in the final game against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Thursday night in sets of 20-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15 and 12-15.
Taylor Hinz led the way with 14 kills, while Avery Hinz and Kiara Hinz followed with nine and eight. Laia Javens tallied another six kills.
Taylor Hinz also led the defensive end with a team-high 13 digs, while Kiara Hinz and Khya Gawarecki followed with eight apiece. Nicole Schwartz also had seven digs.
Gawarecki also paced the offense with 19 assists, as did Schwartz with another 17.
The Lakers were hot from the service line, finishing with 14 aces.
Gawarecki and Taylor Hinz shared a team-high four service aces, while Schwartz and Kiara each had three.
Kiara Hinz also had a strong performance defensively, finishing the night with a team-best six blocks.
Lakeview (6-6) will next return home to host Lac qui Parle Valley on Tuesday with a 7:15 p.m. first serve.
MCC 3, SWMC 0
SLAYTON — Ava Deacon’s 26 digs and 25 combined kills between Reese Gilbertson and Suttyn Schryvers led the Murray County Central volleyball team to its third straight sweeping victory over Southwest Minnesota Christian Thursday night in sets of 25-20, 25-10 and 25-21.
Erynn Rohrer controlled MCC’s offense with a dominating 26 set assists to keep the Rebels in place.
Gilbertson led the way with a team-high 13 kills, while Schryvers followed closely behind with another 12.
The Rebels were aggressive on the defensive end behind Kate Blankenship and Schryvers’ 16 and 13 digs, to add to Deacon’s.
Avery Thovson also helped protect the front of the net with a pair of blocks.
MCC shined at the service line as well with a team-total of nine aces. Blankenship and Schryvers each had a trio of aces, and Thovson added another two.
MCC (7-4) will look for its fourth-straight win when it hits the road to Westbrook-Walnut Grove (9-2) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
WWG 3, Edgerton 0
WESTBROOK — Leah VanDeWiele set the tone defensively with 17 digs on Thursday night as the Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team picked up a 25-9, 25-7, 25-7 sweep of Edgerton in Red Rock Conference play.
Carlie Ross and Sydney Foster aided the back-row defense with nine and seven digs, respectively, while Myah Maznio made an impact at the net with a solo block and a block assist.
Offensively, Hadley Jenniges tallied 28 set assists and seven kills, second on the team to Carlie Ross’ 13. Leah Carter and Foster each added another six.
Foster and Jenniges each served up a pair of aces in the match.
WWG improves to 9-2 on the season and heads to Burnsville for the Class A Showcase today and Saturday and Saturday. The Chargers are scheduled to take on No. 4 Fillmore Central (9-3) at 5:30 p.m. tonight, No. 7 MACCRAY (11-1) at 8:30 p.m. and Cleveland (10-2) at 10 a.m.
RRC 3, MLAC 2
LAMBERTON — After ending a six-match losing streak on Tuesday with a win over Edgerton, the Red Rock Central continued to build momentum on Thursday when it hosted Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey for a Red Rock Conference match. The Falcons went the full five sets once again and pulled out their second consecutive victory.
MLAC took a 2-1 lead through the first three games, winning the first 25-19 and the third 25-23 with an RRC win by a score of 25-19 in between.
With their backs against the wall, the Falcons pulled out a 25-18 win in game four to force a tiebreaker, and won the deciding fifth set 15-13.
Keena Kosel led the Falcons back row with 27 digs in the match while Natasha Erickson added another 18, along with 26 set assists. Amelia Ubl and Ally Linder also contributed 16 digs each.
Abby Evans and Linder led the defensive front row with three blocks each. Evans was also the team’s kill leader, finishing with 14, while Shylin Hagert and Linder ended the night with 11 and seven, respectively.
RRC improves to 3-9 on the season and goes on the road to take on Springfield (2-9)in its next match tonight at 1 p.m.
RCW 3, Wabasso 1
RENVILLE — In a matchup where every point counted, a handful of close sets bounced the wrong way for the Wabasso volleyball team as it lost in four sets to Renville County West.
RCW took two of the first three sets, claiming 25-16 and 26-24 wins with a 25-13 win for the Rabbits in between. Yet, the Jaguars sent Wabasso home with a 25-19 win in set four.
Kenley Guetter led the Wabasso attack with 16 kills, followed by nine from Carly Fenger and eight from Camryn Irlbeck. Guetter’s six digs also tied her with Alexis Remiger for second on the team to Audrey Johnson’s 20.
Fenger recorded four assist blocks in the match while Carlee Jenniges contributed two ace blocks and two block assists.
Sara Carlson tallied 40 set assists.
Wabasso falls to 8-5 on the season and next heads to the Class A Showcase in Burnsville tonight and Saturday. The Rabbits will take on the top-ranked Minneota Vikings (10-2) tonight at 6:30 p.m., No. 9 Ada-Borup-West (9-3) at 8:30 and Spring Grove (5-3) at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
CMC 3, YME 0
PRINSBURG — The Yellow Medicine East volleyball team fell in straight sets to Central Minnesota Christian in Camden Conference play on Thursday, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16.

YME falls to 3-8 on the season and hosts Dawson-Boyd (1-12) in Granite Falls for its next match on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
