MARSHALL — After facing a strong pair of opponents to start the season, the Marshall boys soccer team got on the scoreboard and in the win column for the first time on Tuesday. Hosting Waseca, the Tigers scored four of the game’s final five goals to claim a 6-3 win over the Bluejays in Big South Conference play.

“I just wanted the guys to feel comfortable, and that’s been our goal for this week. We just need to find our confidence,” Marshall head coach Tony Correa said. “We need to find trust in each other, and I feel like they did that better in the second half.”

Waseca scored on a direct corner with 24 minutes remaining in the game to tie up the score at three goals apiece. Yet, the tie didn’t last long. Less than a minute later, Marshall was awarded a corner kick and Coby Guenther capitalized with a header to give him his second goal of the day and the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

“I’ve kind of been working on it [headers] all offseason, so it was a good chance for me,” Guenther said. “It feels good to bounce back. We definitely fixed a few things over the weekend.”

Guenther’s first goal of the night came 15 minutes into the first half when he recovered a rebound in the box and tapped it in for Marshall’s second goal on its first three shots.

The Bluejays rallied back shortly after Guenther’s first goal of the night. With 19 minutes remaining in the first half, a long-sent ball reached Diego Topanta just outside of the box. He corralled it on the ground and sent it past an out-of-position keeper for Waseca’s first goal. Another 90 seconds later, Topanta netted another goal to tie up the game at two goals apiece.

Marshall broke through onto the scoresheet for the first time this season with a goal from Sabino six minutes into the game. After a few near misses at the goal, some passing around the middle allowed Us to shoot the ball diagonally across the middle for a 1-0 lead.

“We just tried to have fun with our team and play football as a team,” Us said of scoring the team’s first goal of the season. “It feels good playing with the team.”

Defensively, the Marshall Tigers were strong throughout the game. They limited the Bluejays to just three shots on goal in the match. Correa credited Topanta for his speed and his ability to apply pressure, but said that he trusts his center backs and that his team just needs to be aware.

After graduating goalkeeper Roberto Garcia Lopez at the end of last season, the Tigers have two new goalies this year in Jameson Cornell and Caden Hess. Correa said at this point, he’s just looking to get the two sophomores comfortable and confident as they take on more responsibility.

Jackson Moo gave Marshall momentum going into the break, netting a goal in the final minute of the first half to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead heading into the locker room.

“We talked at halftime, and we’re always the type to keep building. We never want to throw everything right away, we want to just gradually keep getting better,” Correa said. “After halftime… There was more communication, there was more team play and they were just really seeking that team play.”

The Tigers’ strong competition early on the schedule left them with six unanswered goals allowed to start the season before Us’ go-ahead goal on Tuesday. Marshall fell 2-0 to Sioux Falls Christian to open the season and 4-0 to Breck in the Tigers’ home opener on Saturday.

Isaiah MacMurchy rocketed a penalty kick off the crossbar and into the back of the net with under five minutes remaining, and Ali Sayid iced the game for the Tigers with another goal in the final minute to make the score 6-3.

Marshall (1-2) will host its second consecutive home game on Thursday, taking on St. Peter at 7 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
