Tigers fight but drop dual against LQPV

MARSHALL — In a back-and-forth competition with a pair of victories in doubles, the Marshall girls tennis team fell just short to Lac qui Parle Valley 3-4 Friday afternoon.

Brooklyn Mauch was the lone Tiger to earn a win in singles with sweeping the first two sets. She won the first 6-4, and hung on for a 7-6 win in the second set.

But, Cora Medina, Ilianna Bautista and Emry Jans each had competitive pairings in their matchups as well.

Medina stayed within reach of LQPV’s Maya Virji, but ultimately fell in sets of 6-4 and 7-5.

Bautista dropped the first set 7-5 up against Reese Koosmann, and lost in the second 6-1.

Jans was on the verge of a comeback in the second set of her match against Greta Hacker after falling 6-2 in the first, but ended up two points shy, 6-4.

Marshall took two matches in doubles, with Emry Weller and Jazilyn Stienberg-Jones winning their first two sets consecutively, as did the DeMuth sisters of Peyton and Eme.

Weller and Stienberg-Jones set the tone early with a first-set 6-2 win, and finished it off with a 6-4 victory in the second.

The DeMuth’s recorded a 6-3 in both of their sets.

Julia Pafko and Paige Doose also partnered up for a doubles match, but fell short 6-1 in two sets.

This was Marshall’s second dual in two days, who traveled on Thursday to take on Blue Earth and suffered a 7-0 loss.

In Thursday’s meet, Mauch, Kathryn Coudron, Kyra Bailey and Medina all competed in the singles.

The DeMuth’s along with Weller and Steinberg-Jones were competed together again in doubles, while Bautista and Jans also partnered up for a matchup.

Weller and Stienberg-Jones forced their match to three sets after taking the first one 7-5, but Blue Earth edged out the two Tigers 7-5 and 10-7 in the final two sets.

Marshall falls to 0-4 to begin the season, but will next have a couple days off from competition.

The Tigers will return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Belle Plaine for a 4:30 p.m. match.
