MARSHALL — Despite gutting out a pair of tiebreaker set victories in its dual against Hutchinson, the Marshall tennis team was unable to snag a win in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Marshall Tigers got two points from its trio of hockey players — with Brooklyn Mauch claiming a singles victory and Peyton and Eme DeMuth earning a doubles victory — as well as another singles win from Kyra Bailey, but lost 4-3.
Making her debut in the No. 1 singles slot for Marshall following the graduation of Taylor DePover in the spring, Mauch came from behind to earn a win for Marshall. Mauch dropped the first set of her match against Sydney Loe 6-4, but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second before clinching the point with an 11-9 tiebreaker victory.
Bailey also had to battle through a tiebreaker set against Olivia Mach in singles No. 3. Mach took the first set 7-6 (7-1), but Bailey rallied for a 6-2 win in the second set and finished off the victory with a 10-6 tiebreaker.
Sisters Peyton and Eme DeMuth also pulled out a hard-fought win over Lillian Curtiss and Kadi Powell in doubles No. 3. In a back-and-forth first set, the DeMuths eked out a 7-6 (9-7) win before sealing the match with a 6-4 second set.
Kathryn Coudron fell short in a tiebreaker against Taryn Loe in singles No. 2. Coudron claimed the first set by a score of 6-3, but dropped the second 6-1 before falling 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
Emry Weller and Jazilyn Steinberg-Jones fell 7-6 (3), 6-3 to Brooke Hauan and Bhavya Jalla in doubles No. 1, while Ilianna Bautista and Emry Jans lost 6-1, 6-4 to Kinley Miller and Lilly White in doubles No. 2. Cora Medina also fell 6-3, 6-3 to Payton Briggman in singles No. 4.
Marshall falls to 0-2 on the season and will look to work its way into the win column on Thursday when it goes on the road to take on Blue Earth Area at noon.
